Summer Camp Sports and Recreation Lead - Summer Camp

Racquet Up Detroit is an out-of-school youth development program that uses the sport of squash, in combination with academic tutoring, literacy development, fitness education, mentoring, and enrichment to make a lasting positive impact on the lives of Detroit public school students.

We are seeking an energetic, organized, and engaging Summer Camp Sports and Recreation Lead Instructor to plan and lead daily outdoor recreation sessions for middle school students during our Summer Camp program. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working with youth, facilitating large group games, and creating a positive and active camp environment.

Role Overview:

The Summer Camp Sports and Recreation Lead Instructor will design and implement a structured schedule of outdoor sports, team-building activities, and recreational games across the five-week summer camp. Activities should promote teamwork, sportsmanship, physical activity, and fun. Past camp schedules have included games such as Kickball, Capture the Flag, Ultimate Frisbee, relay races, cooperative team challenges, and more.

The instructor will supervise approximately 20 students per session (with up to 40 students during one daily block), and will lead a team of 2–4 support staff.

Responsibilities and expectations include, but are not limited to:

  • Plan and lead four daily outdoor sports and recreation sessions for middle school students
  • Develop a detailed weekly and daily activity schedule for the full duration of camp
  • Facilitate a variety of outdoor sports, team-building games, and cooperative activities
  • Create structured lesson plans that include objectives, warm-ups, main activities, and wrap-ups
  • Supervise and coordinate 2–4 support staff assigned to sports and recreation sessions
  • Ensure safe participation and positive behavior expectations among students
  • Adapt activities to accommodate large groups and varied skill levels
  • Develop and implement rainy-day indoor game plans that can be facilitated in classroom spaces
  • Assist with transitions, attendance, and general camp logistics as needed
  • Build caring, supportive, and meaningful relationships with students
  • Collaborate with camp leadership and other instructional staff to support overall camp goals

Planning expectations include building out approximately 20 days of activities with a balance of sports days and team-building days.

Qualifications:

  • Experience working with youth in camps, schools, sports programs, or recreation settings
  • Strong group management and leadership skills
  • Ability to lead high-energy activities and maintain student engagement
  • Strong organizational and planning skills
  • CPR/First Aid certification preferred (or willingness to obtain)
  • Positive attitude, flexibility, and strong communication skills

Schedule 1: June 29 - July 23, 2026

  • Days: Monday – Thursday
  • Daily Sessions:
  • 9:45 – 10:45 AM
  • 10:45 – 11:45 AM
  • Lunch: 11:45 AM – 12:45 PM
  • 12:45 – 1:45 PM
  • 1:45 – 2:45 PM (double group session)

Schedule 2: July 27 - 30, 2026

  • Days: Monday – Thursday
  • Daily Sessions:
  • 12:45 – 1:45 PM
  • 1:45 – 2:45 PM

Compensation:

  • $20/hour

The program operates at Racquet Up’s headquarters at 6530 West Outer Drive.

Pay: $20.00 per hour

Experience:

  • Youth Development: 1 year (Preferred)

License/Certification:

  • CPR Certification (Preferred)

Ability to Commute:

  • Detroit, MI 48235 (Preferred)
