Key Skills Required
- Experience as Survey Engineer with Roads/Bridge/Culvert/Drain and Sewer Network.
- Route and alignment design understanding
- Proficiency in coordinate geometry (COGO)
- Good knowledge of road and pipeline construction methodology
- Accuracy in setting out long linear infrastructure
- Problem-solving in field adjustments or conflicts
1. Pre-Construction Phase
- Route Surveying:
- Conduct detailed alignment surveys to determine the most suitable path for roads or pipelines.
- Perform reconnaissance surveys to identify physical, legal, or environmental obstacles along the proposed route.
- Topographical Surveys:
- Map existing terrain, contours, utilities, drainage features, and structures to inform design.
- Land Acquisition Surveys:
- Mark property boundaries, easements, and right-of-way (ROW) limits.
2. Construction Phase
- Setting Out / Layout Work:
- Precisely mark:
- Road centerlines, edges, shoulders
- Pipeline alignments (both horizontal and vertical)
- Culverts, bridges, manholes, valve chambers, etc.
- Earthwork & Grading:
- Provide levels and benchmarks for cut and fill operations.
- Guide excavation and embankment processes to meet design levels and slopes.
- Utility Coordination:
- Locate and map existing utilities to prevent damage during excavation.
- Mark crossings or deviations for pipelines.
- Pipeline Specific Tasks:
- Stake bends, joints, valves, tees, and crossings as per engineering drawings.
- Ensure correct depth and slope for gravity or pressure pipelines.
- Quality Control:
- Conduct as-built surveys to verify construction is as per design.
- Identify and report any deviations or settlement issues.
3. Post-Construction
- As-Built Documentation:
- Prepare final as-built drawings showing the actual locations, elevations, and dimensions of installed infrastructure.
- Final Topography:
- Survey and document the finished terrain and infrastructure.
- Handover Records:
- Submit survey files (CAD, GIS, coordinate lists) for archiving and future maintenance.
4. Technical & Reporting Duties
- Instrument Operation:
- Use total stations, RTK GPS/GNSS, drones, auto/digital levels.
- Software Use:
- Process and analyse data using:
- AutoCAD Civil 3D
- GIS
- Survey Pro, Leica Infinity, etc.
- Reporting:
- Submit daily/weekly progress reports, survey logs, and coordinate sheets to project managers and design teams.
5. Safety & Compliance
- Site Safety: Ensure proper safety practices while working near heavy machinery, roads, or trenches.
- Regulatory Compliance: Adhere to government standards and specifications for roads and pipelines (e.g., slope tolerances, pipe bedding, ROW limits).
