Transportation Dispatcher

This is a key position instrumental for the success of the Company in terms of customer satisfaction, Company reputation, and generation of revenue. Intermediary between drivers, brokers, internal and external customers. The Transportation Dispatcher position is responsible for the daily planning and tracking of load movements by utilizing most efficient and effective routing. This position also ensures that time-sensitive loads move to their destination within the established terms. The Dispatcher also provides direction, guidance, and problem resolutions to drivers ensuring that goals are accomplished.

The Transportation Dispatcher must be experienced in directing an owner-operator fleet, with extensive knowledge of transportation and logistics. Additionally, the Transportation Dispatcher should be able to communicate effectively, provide shipment updates, and take initiative to identify and handle potential problems. Merx will offer premium pay for Transportation Dispatchers who bring their own book of business.

Responsibilities and Essential Functions

  • Communicates daily with customers (customers and brokers), drivers, and other internal functions (internal Brokerage, Safety, etc.,).
  • Coordinates, troubleshoots, and resolves issues for pick-ups and deliveries with brokers, driers, and end-customers.
  • Exercises deep knowledge of current market pricing on backhaul and head haul lanes.
  • Applies knowledge and experience with HOS, Hazmat, and DOT regulations, facilitates the booking process of scheduling freight and drivers accordingly.
  • Develops, maintains, and expands mutually beneficial relationship with existing and new brokers and end customers securing direct freight at profitable rates.
  • Promotes Merx’s commitment to drivers’ safety (e.g., ensuring that the drivers are not under forced dispatch) and provides them with the types of lanes they prefer to run, while securing maximized freight revenue for the Company.
  • Responsible for checking the credit history of potential customers/brokers to determine financial stability and reliability of the businesses.
  • Book freight from customers and brokers
  • Answering inbound calls and providing solutions to drivers
  • Developing relationships with new shippers to obtain direct freight
  • Be on time, prompt and prepared daily
  • Responsible for negotiating rates to maximize profits

Required Qualification

  • Must have a minimum 3 years of experience as a dispatcher with an asset-based over the road motor carrier to be considered for this position.
  • Preference will be given to experienced transportation dispatchers who bring their own book of business.

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Fluent English speaking and writing skills, additional languages a plus
  • Ability to uphold the highest ethical standards when performing the job
  • Exceptional customer service skills
  • Knowledge of the United States geographical area
  • Excellent multi-tasking, time management and organizational skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge in McLeod Transportation Management System preferred, not required
  • Familiar with PC Miler, DAT, Mitel/Shoretel, Omnitracs preferred, but not required
  • Highly proficient with Gmail, Gchat, CRM tools and Microsoft Products required
  • Know-how with HOS and DOT regulations
  • Highly organized self-starter with the ability to work independently or in a team environment
  • Positive, collaborative, flexible, can-do attitude
  • Capability in a fast-paced, competitive setting
  • Open minded with proven record of accomplishment of solving difficult and stressful situations
  • Experience with handling a high volume of phone calls and emails
  • Safe working methods

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Environment:

  • Indoor environment subject to frequent interruptions; changing priorities from time to time
  • In-office position, no hybrid or remote

  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of standard office equipment
  • Verbal, auditory, and written capabilities to effectively communicate in an articulate manner
  • Sitting or standing for extended periods of time
