Transportation Manager

Key Responsibilities

  • Operational Management
  • Plan, coordinate, and monitor the transportation of products to ensure timely and accurate deliveries.
  • Develop and implement routing and scheduling strategies to maximize efficiency and reduce costs.
  • Manage the maintenance and utilization of company vehicles and equipment.
  • Team Leadership
  • Supervise, train, and evaluate transportation staff, including drivers, dispatchers, and logistics coordinators.
  • Foster a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Carrier and Vendor Relations
  • Negotiate contracts and rates with carriers and third-party logistics providers (3PLs).
  • Monitor carrier performance and ensure service-level agreements (SLAs) are met.
  • Compliance and Safety
  • Ensure compliance with DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, and other transportation-related regulations.
  • Oversee driver qualification files, hours-of-service logs, and vehicle inspection records.
  • Financial Management
  • Develop and manage the transportation budget, controlling costs related to fuel, labor, and maintenance.
  • Analyze freight costs and performance metrics to identify cost-saving opportunities.
  • Reporting and Analysis
  • Generate transportation performance reports, including on-time delivery rates, fuel consumption, and route efficiency.
  • Use data and analytics to improve logistics processes and service quality.

Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business Administration, or a related field (preferred).
  • 5+ years of experience in transportation or logistics management, with at least 2 years in a supervisory role.
  • Experience with transportation management systems (TMS) and route optimization software.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong knowledge of DOT/FMCSA regulations.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and negotiation skills.
  • Analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and logistics software tools.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.

Certifications (Preferred):

  • Certified Transportation Professional (CTP)
  • Lean Six Sigma Certification
  • CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) may be a plus

Work Environment

  • Office and warehouse environment with occasional travel to distribution centers or customer locations.
  • May require extended hours or weekend work during peak periods.
