Description of Work

This posting is for a Transportation Worker II in the Division 9 Traffic Services Unit. The primary purpose of this position is to serve as the sign crew lead in Davidson County for Traffic Services. This position is stationed in Davidson County, but work will be performed across all 5 counties in Division 9, as needed. The duties of this position include installation, maintenance, and repair of signs across Division 9. Applicants should have experience maintaining a sign inventory. Position requires emergency call back to repair damaged signs and snow/ice removal. May be required to assist with installation of pavement markings. Employee must have the ability to plan and carry out assigned projects independently. This position requires the ability to properly install and/or manage the installation of temporary traffic control as needed in accordance with NCDOT Standards. Position requires the ability to work in an outside environment, including extreme heat and cold, year-round.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC05 / $32,639 - $57,117

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Experience in the installation of traffic control such as detours and lane closures
  • Experience reading and interpreting plans and specifications
  • Experience in Intermediate Work Zone Safety and knowledge in Advance Work Zone Safety and NC DOT Workplace Safety Practices
  • Experience in Installing and maintaining Type A & B signs or Advanced Sign Design
  • Experience in Customer Service

The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substance and alcohol testing. Safety-toed shoes required.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.
