Description of Work

NCDOT seeks a skilled and experienced Welder/Fabricator to join our team. This position will be responsible for fabricating, joining, and repairing metal components and structures according to specifications and blueprints, using various welding techniques and equipment. Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings to determine welding requirements. Select appropriate welding equipment and techniques based on project specifications, including TIG, Stick, and MIG welding with Flux-cored or Solid-cored wire. Set up and operate welding equipment to fuse metal components in various positions (e.g., flat, vertical, overhead). The use of torch cutting techniques which involves using various types of torches, such as oxy-fuel (oxy-acetylene or plasma cutting torches) to cut, shape and trim metal material according to specific requirements. Experience with press brake operation/metal fabrication is preferred. Work assignments are received from the Machine Shop Supervisor with general instructions regarding the welding needed. Work is performed at the journey level in accordance with established shop and trade practices, but incumbent exercises considerable initiative in developing their own procedures and work methods. Review for adequacy and quality of assembly and welding is made by the machine shop supervisor through an evaluation of the performance of the repaired parts and equipment. Participates in the NCDOT Safety Program and helps to verify compliance through inspections on a regular basis. Research new or better methods of repairs and is actively involved in the cost evaluation of jobs for cost savings. Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Knowledge of metal working, metal fabrication and selection of the correct welding and cutting process.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with little instruction or guidance.
  • Demonstrated ability to work from and follow oral and written directions, sketches and blueprint, and physical strength to move heavy objects.
  • Experience using tools such as TIG/MIG and Stick Welders, Oxygen/Acetylene Torch and Plasma Cutters.

Additional Expectations:

Must be able to legally operate a state vehicle.

An approved welder’s certification is required within 360 days of hire.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development diploma (GED) diploma and two years of progressive experience in acetylene or electric arc welding; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
