Driver Recruitment Officer / Driver Recruitment Specialist (Van and bike Drivers)

Role summary
Responsible for end‑to‑end recruitment of van drivers for Time Express: advertising vacancies, screening applicants, verifying licences and right to work, conducting practical driving assessments and interviews, managing offers and on boarding so only safe, reliable, customer‑focused drivers join the fleet.
Key responsibilities
- Design and place job adverts across job boards, social media, local colleges, and recruitment partners to attract van driver candidates.
- Manage applicant flow: review CVs, pre‑screen by phone, and shortlist applicants against role criteria.
- Verify key documentation: driving licence (appropriate category), entitlement checks, right to work, medical certificates, and any vocational licences/CPC where required.
- Conduct telephone and face‑to‑face interviews focusing on driving history, customer service, reliability, route knowledge and situational judgement.
- Organise and conduct practical driving assessments/ride‑alongs and route‑based evaluations with a trained assessor.
- Coordinate background checks: DVLA licence checks, criminal record checks (where required), employment and reference checks, and drug & alcohol screening.
- Liaise with depot managers to validate operational fit and final selection decisions.
- Prepare conditional and unconditional job offers, negotiate start dates, and manage pre‑employment paperwork.
- Coordinate induction, mandatory training (manual handling, vehicle checks, IT/handheld device training, customer service), and probation monitoring.
- Maintain accurate recruitment records and candidate database; ensure compliance with data protection laws.
- Monitor recruitment KPIs (time‑to‑hire, retention, offer acceptance, probation pass rate) and produce regular reports.
- Source and maintain relationships with staffing agencies, college leavers schemes, job centres, and community partners.
- Promote Time Express employer brand; ensure a positive candidate experience and represent company values.
- Support continuous improvement of recruitment processes and training materials.
Essential qualifications & experience
- Proven experience in recruitment, preferably recruiting drivers, logistics staff or similar operational roles.
- Experience running practical assessments and interpreting DVLA checks.
- Excellent knowledge of right to work checks and pre‑employment screening processes.
- Strong organisational skills and ability to manage high volume recruitment campaigns.
- Good interpersonal skills, able to assess customer service attitude and reliability.
- Familiarity with applicant tracking systems (ATS) and MS Office.
Desirable
- Experience in transport/logistics industry or depot environment.
- Knowledge of vehicle categories and vocational licence requirements (C1/C/CE, Driver CPC where applicable).
- Experience with digital route planning/telemetry platforms and mobile delivery tech.

Compliance & checks

- Medical/fitness to drive declaration; occupational health referral if required.
- Criminal record check where job duties require (e.g., high‑value or sensitive deliveries).
- Employment references covering previous driving experience.
KPIs / success measures
- Time‑to‑hire (days from advert to start).
- Percentage of hires who pass probation.
- Driver retention at 3/6/12 months.
- Percentage of shortlisted candidates passing driving assessment and checks.
- Reduction in recruitment costs (agency spend).
- Quality of hire metrics (on‑road incidents, customer complaints attributable to new hires).
Onboarding & probation
- Complete induction (company policies, vehicle checks, safe loading, customer service, use of devices).
- Buddy/mentorship: initial ride‑along with experienced driver for first week.
- Probation review at 4/8/12 weeks with clear performance targets.
