SUMMARY:

The Fabrication Manager oversees all day-to-day operations in the fabrication department, ensuring that custom projects are completed safely, on time, within budget, and to customer specifications. This role leads a team of skilled fabricators, welders, polishers, and assemblers, coordinating workflow, materials, and quality standards to support the company’s goals.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Leadership & Operations

  • Plan, organize, and manage fabrication schedules, staffing, and production flow.

  • Lead and develop a team of fabricators, welders, and support staff; provide training and mentorship.

  • Ensure safe work practices and compliance with all company and OSHA safety standards.

  • Collaborate with engineering and project management teams to interpret drawings, specifications, and design changes to develop manufacturing plans for all projects.

  • Monitor job progress, material usage, and labor efficiency; identify and implement process improvements.

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient shop environment aligned with 5S principles.

Quality & Continuous Improvement

  • Review fabrication work to ensure accuracy, fit, finish, and compliance with customer requirements including compliance with an NQA-1 Quality program.

  • Drive continuous improvement in welding, cutting, forming, and assembly processes.

  • Troubleshoot fabrication issues and lead root cause analysis for defects or delays.

Project & Resource Management

  • Coordinate with purchasing to ensure materials and supplies are available to meet deadlines.

  • Manage production documentation, time tracking, and job costing.

  • Assist in estimating fabrication labor and material requirements for new projects.

Communication & Collaboration

  • Work closely with design, engineering, and project management teams to align production goals.

  • Communicate effectively with leadership regarding production performance, challenges, and resource needs.

  • Represent the fabrication department during internal and customer project reviews.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position manages leads and shop personnel and will provide direction to other groups based on circumstances or projects.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or GED required; technical certificate or degree in Welding Technology, Manufacturing, or Mechanical Engineering preferred.

  • 5+ years’ experience in a project-based fabrication or equipment building environment with proven ability to read detail drawings, build specifications, and quality requirements and translate into manufacturing strategies and plans.

  • Experience with fabrication processes and equipment, including lifting/rigging large equipment, TIG welding, machining, cutting, forming, and processing. Stainless steel fabrication experience highly desirable.

  • Experience with highly rigorous quality program such as NQA-1, AS9100 or equivalent is highly desirable.

  • Demonstrated leadership and vision in managing staff groups and major projects or initiatives.

  • This position requires an ongoing commitment to improving management skills through internal or external training of at least 20 hours of classes or seminars annually.

SKILLS and ABILITIES:

  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

  • Ability to understand program requirements as communicated by project managers and integrate into written manufacturing plans.

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

  • Ability to think critically with high attention to detail.

  • Intermediate experience with Microsoft Office.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, OTHER:

  • Lean certificate, prior training in Lean Manufacturing, or significant hands-on experience in a Lean environment a plus.

  • CWI certification a plus.
