The Law Firm for Truck Safety is a nationally recognized law firm dedicated exclusively to representing victims of catastrophic truck crashes. Our attorneys are leaders in trucking litigation and many hold Commercial Driver’s Licenses (CDLs) and board certifications in Truck Accident Law.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Controller leads the firm’s accounting operations and ensures the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of accounting processes, period close and financial reporting across all offices and partnerships. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, this role is responsible for the day-to-day financial infrastructure of the firm, including core accounting functions, partnership accounting compliance, cash flow management, and partner contributions.

In partnership with the CFO, the Controller supports budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis that strengthens visibility into firm performance and informs strategic decision-making. This role also plays a key part in financial systems optimization, including ERP evaluation and implementation initiatives.

The ideal candidate brings strong technical accounting expertise, experience in a law firm or professional services environment, and the ability to translate complex financial data into clear, actionable insights for leadership.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Financial Management & Reporting

  • Lead day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll coordination, trust accounting (IOLTA), and month-end/quarter-end/year-end close
  • Ensure accurate and timely financial statements across all offices
  • Prepare and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports to firm leadership
  • Maintain integrity, accuracy, and transparency of all financial data
  • Manage cash flow, working capital, and banking relationships in partnership with CFO.
  • Oversee partner compensation in accordance with firm agreements
  • Develop financial dashboards and KPIs to improve visibility into firm performance
  • Supervise accounting staff or outsourced accounting partners, establishing clear roles, accountability, and process consistency

Budgeting, Financial Planning & Analysis

  • Support annual budgeting/planning process in collaboration with CFO and firm leadership
  • Develop and maintain rolling financial forecasts and cash flow projections
  • Build reporting that provides visibility into profitability and cost structure
  • Provide scenario modeling and financial analysis to support decision making
  • Support evaluation of growth initiatives, including new offices, partner onboarding, and lateral hires
  • Provide financial insights related to compensation models, equity structure, and long-term profitability

Internal Controls & Compliance

  • Establish and maintain strong internal controls and financial policies
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable legal accounting standards
  • Oversee trust account compliance (IOLTA) and related regulatory requirements
  • Coordinate with external CPA firm for tax preparation and annual review
  • Support audit processes and strengthen documentation of financial procedures

Systems, ERP & Process Improvement

  • Partner with CFO and operational leadership in evaluation, selection, and implementation of ERP and financial systems
  • Lead financial workflow design within broader technology initiatives
  • Improve integration between accounting, billing, case management, and reporting platforms
  • Establish financial data governance and “source of truth” standards
  • Drive documentation, SOP development, and process standardization within the finance function
  • Support the Firm’s continued growth strategy and related merger & acquisitions activities

Leadership & Team Development

  • Lead, mentor, and develop accounting team members, fostering a high-performance and accountable culture
  • Establish clear goals, performance expectations, and professional development plans
  • Promote cross-functional collaboration with legal, operations, and leadership teams
  • Build scalable team structure aligned with firm growth

Performance Expectations | First 12 Months

  • Within the first 12 months, the Controller will:
  • Establish consistent, timely month-end close processes with clear reporting packages delivered to leadership on a predictable schedule
  • Implement a rolling 13-week cash flow forecast and annual budgeting/planning process that provides leadership with forward-looking financial visibility
  • Revise and update standardized financial dashboards that provide transparency into profitability by office, attorney, and matter type
  • Strengthen internal controls and oversight to ensure audit readiness and regulatory compliance
  • Play a leadership role in ERP and financial systems evaluation or implementation, ensuring finance workflows are clearly defined and aligned with firm growth
  • Clarify and document partner distribution processes and financial policies to improve consistency and transparency

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including senior-level executive team relationships for financial and management reporting
  • Prior experience in a law firm or professional services environment
  • Direct experience overseeing trust accounting (IOLTA) and related regulatory compliance
  • Esure strict compliance with all state bar rules related to client trust accounts across jurisdictions
  • Monitor controls around client funds, disbursements, and settlement accounting
  • Demonstrated capability in handling and reporting of month-end, quarter-end and year-end close processes
  • Experience leading budgeting/planning and cash flow forecasting processes
  • Experience participating in ERP evaluation, implementation, or financial system redesign
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and internal controls
  • Advanced proficiency with accounting and financial reporting systems
  • CPA or CMA preferred
  • Must be bondable
