Work Shifts


8:00 A.M – 4:00 P.M (Alternating Weekends)


Duties & Responsibilities


Purpose of Position:

Under supervision, analyzes, abstracts, codes or indexes patients' medical record in a health care setting in compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal rules and regulations. Through coding and reporting, supports optimal utilization of System resources and services to improve outcomes in conformance with NYC Health + Hospitals standards of care; performs related work.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Reviews, analyzes, abstracts, codes or indexes patients' medical record.

2. Prepares and maintains records, abstracts and summaries.

3. May do comparative studies for determining data quality.

4. Completes data correction forms.

5. Prepares Congenital Malformations Report, Alzheimer's Disease, and other Dementias Report forms, as required.

6. Instructs health care setting staff in the use of current coding classification.

7. May supervise and train other professional administrative staff of a medical record department.

8. May organize, file and retrieve medical records.

Minimum Qualifications


1. High school diploma or its educational equivalent, approved by a State’s Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization; and
2. Completion of a coding or billing, medical record technology or health information technology (HIT) program approved by a nationally accredited agency (e.g., the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) or the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Education (CAHIIM)); or
3. Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) by AHIMA, Certified Professional Coder (CPC) by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) or Certified Medical Billing Specialist (CMBS) by the Medical Association of Billers (MAB); or
4. Two (2) years of satisfactory experience in coding and/or abstracting medical records in a health care setting.
