POSITION PROFILE
A pastry chef's job description involves preparing, baking, and decorating a wide variety of desserts and baked goods like cakes, cookies, and pastries. Key duties include recipe creation, managing inventory, maintaining a clean and sanitary workspace, and potentially supervising other kitchen staff. Qualifications can range from a high school diploma for entry-level positions to an associate or bachelor's degree in pastry arts for more advanced roles, along with strong technical skills, creativity, and attention to detail.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILTIES<ul><li>
Creation and preparation: Bake a wide variety of goods, such as cakes, cookies, pies, pastries, and breads, following both traditional and new recipes.</li><li>
Decoration: Decorate desserts with frostings, glazes, and toppings to create visually appealing presentations.</li><li>
Menu development: Contribute ideas for new dishes and create custom desserts.</li><li>
Inventory and ordering: Check and order ingredients and supplies for the pastry section.</li><li>
Kitchen management: Maintain a clean and hygienic work area and manage kitchen staff.</li><li>
Record-keeping: Keep accurate records of food costs and inventory.</li></ul>
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES<ul><li>
High school education or equivalent experience. Culinary certificate or degree preferred.</li><li>
An associate's degree in pastry arts or a certificate from a culinary institution is highly desired.</li><li>
Strong baking techniques and the ability to operate kitchen equipment.</li><li>
Creativity in designing unique desserts and new flavor combinations.</li><li>
Attention to detail: Meticulous in measuring ingredients and perfecting presentations.</li><li>
Excellent organization and time management skills.</li><li>
Ability to communicate clearly and work well with other staff.</li><li>
Ability to work well under pressure and accept criticism.</li></ul>
PHYSICAL DEMANDS<ul><li>
Able to lift, push, carry 20 - 40 lbs.</li><li>
Stand continuously for long periods of time.</li><li>
