Job Description
 
The U.S. Attorney's Office is currently seeking to fill Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) positions in the Appellate Division in our Houston, Texas office. The Appellate Division represents the U.S. Attorney's Office in criminal matters in the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. As an AUSA in the Appellate Division, you will research, write appellate briefs and post-conviction responses, and present oral arguments on a variety of complex and novel issues involving the constitution, statutory construction, evidentiary and procedural matters, and sentencing issues. You will be assigned cases arising from offenses relating to immigration, national security, and public safety. You will also provide real-time trial assistance to Criminal Division AUSAs.

Salary

POSITION SUMMARY: 
 
Under the direction of the CODIS Administrator, the Assistant CODIS Administrator is responsible for the input and retrieval of data entered into the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) utilized by the Forensic Biology Division of Houston Forensic Science Center (HFSC). CODIS is a national FBI system used to search DNA profiles obtained from crime scene evidence against DNA profiles from other crime scenes and from convicted offenders and arrestees. CODIS can generate investigative leads in cases when a match is obtained. The Assistant CODIS Administrator is responsible for operating the DNA profile database for exchange of sensitive and confidential criminal-related genetic information among federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies. The Assistant CODIS Administrator is accountable for utilizing the system appropriately to ensure accurate and timely results are released to the requesting investigator. 
Specific duties include, but are not limited to: 
<ul><li>
Operate the CODIS database in accordance with state and/or federal law and State DNA Index System (SDIS) and National DNA Index System (NDIS) operational procedures.</li><li>
Ensure appropriate entry of information within the database.</li><li>
Retrieve data and makes appropriate notifications in a timely manner.</li><li>
Review and make best efforts to disposition matches in accordance with CODIS Handbook, NDIS Operational Procedures, and CODIS SOP.</li><li>
Upload profiles to SDIS and NDIS, schedules uploads from local laboratories, and reviews CODIS generated reports.</li><li>

The casework Assistant CODIS Administrator shall meet the educational requirements for a Forensic Analyst in DNA. The Forensic Analyst in DNA must meet the educational requirements stated in the Quality Assurance System (QAS):

Bachelor's degree in biology, biochemistry, genetics, forensic sciences, or a closely related science field from an accredited college/university (transcripts required).</li><li>
Subjects providing a basic understanding of forensic DNA analysis, as well as courses or training in statistics and population genetics as they apply to forensic DNA analysis.</li></ul>
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: 
A casework Assistant CODIS Administrator shall be a current or previously qualified analyst.
