POSITION OVERVIEW
Sanctuary for Families Community Law Project (CLP) seeks an attorney with domestic violence and/or family law experience to provide comprehensive, culturally competent legal services to survivors of domestic and gender based violence who seek assistance with family offense, custody/visitation, and child/spousal support proceedings, as well as matrimonial matters. The attorney will also conduct community legal clinics, outreach and training and will collaborate with other agencies to advocate for systemic change. The attorney will work out of the Manhattan Office and will report to the Center&rsquo;s Sr. Deputy Director and Sr. Director. 
RESPONSIBILITIES<ul><li>
Provides direct representation and advocacy to clients in family law litigation, including family offense, custody and visitation, child and spousal support and divorces in all five boroughs of NYC. Provides other advocacy as needed, including the criminal legal and child protective systems;</li><li>
Provides pro se legal assistance and consultations to clients in family law matters;</li><li>
Conducts legal clinics at community based organizations;</li><li>
Staffs the Legal Helpline;</li><li>
Co-counsels cases with project, Legal Center and pro bono attorneys; supports training of junior staff members.Advocates directly for clients with key stakeholders including but not limited to NYPD, prosecutors, Administration for Children&rsquo;s Services (ACS), Human Resources Administration (HRA), and Division for Homeless Services (DHS);</li><li>
Conducts community based outreach and training;</li><li>
Works with Sanctuary&rsquo;s Community and Outreach Training Initiative (SCOTI) to coordinate, organize and participate in outreach and training events;</li><li>
Represents Sanctuary for Families on task forces and other political and advocacy committees outside the agency.</li><li>
Collaborates with volunteers, interns and pro bono attorneys.</li><li>
Directs cases to the appropriate resources within the agency and the Legal Center;</li><li>
Tracks the status of cases referred internally and externally;</li><li>
Fosters and maintains relationships with Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) that refer clients to the Helpline;</li><li>
Partners with the Pro Bono Project in identifying cases that are suitable for representation by pro bono attorneys;</li><li>
Performs any other department or agency-related duties or special projects as directed by the Sr. Legal Director and Sr. Deputy Director.</li></ul>

The ACLU seeks applicants for the full-time, term-limited position of Staff Attorney, Senior Staff Attorney, or Senior Counsel in the Capital Punishment Project of the ACLU&rsquo;s National office in Durham, NC or New York, NY. This is a two-year, term-limited position. This position may be eligible for remote work in the United States.

The Capital Punishment Project, part of the ACLU&rsquo;s Center for Justice, challenges the unfairness and arbitrariness of capital punishment while working toward the ultimate goal of abolishing the death penalty. The Project engages in public advocacy and strategic litigation, including the direct representation of capital defendants, challenges to systemic problems in the administration of capital punishment, and amicus briefings.

This position is part of a collective bargaining unit. It is represented by ACLU Staff United (ASU).

This position is a new role dedicated to identifying and implementing strategies to challenge and expose unlawful execution practices by outlier states. The position may include litigation of individual clients&rsquo; cases in state and federal court.

This is a hybrid role that has in-office requirements of two (2) days per week or eight (8) days per month.

The ACLU&rsquo;s Project on Speech, Privacy, and Technology (SPT) is dedicated to protecting and expanding the First Amendment freedoms of expression, association, and inquiry; expanding the right to privacy and increasing the control that individuals have over their personal information; and ensuring that civil liberties are enhanced rather than compromised by new advances in science and technology. The project is currently working on a variety of issues, including political protest, freedom of expression online, privacy of electronic information, journalists&rsquo; rights, scientific freedom, and openness in the courts.

The Criminal Law Reform Project&rsquo;s mission is to advocate for the constitutional and civil rights of those impacted by criminal legal systems. We use litigation and advocacy to confront systemic government conduct that fuels the carceral state and police abuse, and oppresses people based on race, class, and other characteristics. CLRP does this work because everyone suspected, accused, or convicted of a crime deserves dignity, fairness, and an opportunity to thrive.

<li>Maintain a docket of active and developing lawsuits challenging illegal and unconstitutional practices by federal and state law enforcement agents</li>

For example, CLRP is currently exploring the application of the Americans with Disabilities Act across several areas of work, and in the past has utilized tort, consumer projection, and anti-racketeering law to challenge wealth discrimination in criminal systems</li>
<li>Experience with data analysis as an advocacy or litigation tool</li>
<li>Experience with complex litigation, such as civil rights class actions or other forms of impact litigation.</li>
<li>Skilled in working with or representing vulnerable clients, particularly those involved in the criminal legal system</li>
<li>You have deposition, trial, or hearing experience, or experience at oral argument or appellate litigation</li>

Sanctuary for Families is New York&rsquo;s leading service provider and advocate for survivors of domestic violence, sex trafficking and related forms of gender violence. Every year, Sanctuary empowers thousands of adults and children to move from fear and abuse to safety and stability, transforming lives through a comprehensive range of services. We provide a range of wrap-around services to help survivors rebuild their lives in the aftermath of abuse, and work to end gender violence through three key strategies: direct services, outreach and training, and systems-change advocacy. Our services are available in 12 locations throughout New York City. 
POSITION OVERVIEW 
The Staff Attorney is a key position in the Anti-Trafficking Initiative (ATI) that provides legal services for survivors of human trafficking in a variety of legal areas. The Staff Attorney works with ATI&rsquo;s holistic service team to provide comprehensive, trauma-informed, holistic, and survivor-centered services for survivors of commercial sexual exploitation and/or human trafficking, through legal consultations, direct representation, case management assistance and community education and outreach. A critical aspect of the Staff Attorney&rsquo;s role is to promote clients&rsquo; right to self-determination and provide services in a manner that emphasizes safety, respect, and dignity. The Staff Attorney may be asked to conduct trainings and community outreach, and collaborate with other agencies to advocate for systematic change. 
RESPONSIBILITIES<ul><li>
 Screens, advises, and advocates for clients who are survivors of human trafficking and other co-occurring forms of gender-based violence.</li><li>
Provides legal representation in a variety of legal areas, predominantly, immigration and criminal justice advocacy, advocacy for victim rights, and criminal representation in post-conviction relief cases.</li><li>
Represents survivors in humanitarian immigration relief before a variety of federal agencies, including but not limited to asylum, SIJS, T and U Nonimmigrant Status, VAWA, and any other form of relief available.</li><li>
Represent survivors in limited scope family law matters, including but not limited to guardianship proceedings, custody, and orders of protection.</li><li>
Develops and conducts trainings and outreach to judges, law enforcement agencies, social service providers, health care professionals, and community organizations on the dynamics of human trafficking, commercial exploitation, and possible legal remedies.</li><li>
Collaborates with ATI&rsquo;s inter-disciplinary team to provide holistic, trauma-informed, survivor-centered, linguistically competent services and direct financial assistance and donations to clients.</li><li>
Helps to mentor project assistants, volunteer attorneys, legal fellows, and/or interns as they provide legal services, referrals and support to clients.</li><li>
Represents Sanctuary for Families at community events relevant to Sanctuary&rsquo;s Anti-Trafficking work, and on task forces and other political and advocacy committees outside the agency.</li><li>
Maintains timely and accurate records in electronic databases and data relating to client services for grant reporting purposes.</li><li>
Works in collaboration with clinicians, other attorneys, health care providers, local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, and district attorney&rsquo;s offices, and any other organization, to secure the best results for our clients.</li><li>
Performs any other Legal Department or agency-related duties or special projects as directed by the Director and Supervising Attorney of the Anti-Trafficking Initiative.</li></ul>
<ul><li>JD Degree.</li><li>
Admission to the New York State Bar.</li><li>
Experience in the fields of human trafficking or co-occurring forms of gender based violence.</li><li>
Bi-lingual in Spanish and English required.</li><li>
Experience preferred in representing applicants in affirmative immigration filings; or criminal justice advocacy, victim rights and criminal representation in post-conviction relief cases.</li><li>
Strong interpersonal, organizational, public speaking, and leadership skills.</li><li>
Excellent writing, research and analytical skills.</li><li>

Staff Attorney, Anti-Trafficking Initiative

<div><h2 class="jobSectionHeader">ABOUT THE JOB</h2>

The ACLU seeks applicants for the term-limited, full-time position of Staff Attorney or Senior Staff Attorney in the Voting Rights Project of the ACLU&rsquo;s National office in New York, NY or Washington, DC. This is a two-year, term-limited position. This is a hybrid role that has in-office requirements of two (2) days per week or eight (8) days per month.

Established in 1965, VRP has worked to protect the gains in political participation won by voters of color since passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act (VRA). Since its inception, the Voting Rights Project has litigated hundreds of voting rights cases, and has aggressively and successfully challenged efforts to suppress voting or to dilute minority voting strength.

The ACLU Voting Rights Project was established in 1965 &ndash; the same year that the historic Voting Rights Act (VRA) was enacted &ndash; and has litigated more than 350 cases since that time. Its mission is to build and defend an accessible, inclusive, and equitable democracy free from racial discrimination. We have three principles: (1) all Americans should be eligible to vote; (2) voting should be free and easy; and (3) all people should count equally. The Project employs an integrated advocacy approach, combining legislative advocacy, public education, and litigation, and has active cases in over a dozen states.

The Voting Rights Project&rsquo;s recent docket has included more than 30 lawsuits to protect voters during the 2020 election; a pair of recent cases in the Supreme Court challenging the last administration&rsquo;s discriminatory census policies: Department of Commerce v. New York (successfully challenging an attempt to add a citizenship question to the 2020 Census), and Trump v. New York (challenging the exclusion of undocumented immigrants from the population count used to apportion the House of Representatives); challenges to discriminatory congressional and state legislative maps, including two recent cases in the Supreme Court: Alexander v. South Carolina NAACP (2023), challenging South Carolina&rsquo;s congressional map as an unconstitutional and starkly racially gerrymandered map; and Allen v. Milligan (2023), successfully challenging Alabama&rsquo;s congressional map as unlawfully diluting the Black voting power under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act; challenges to voter purges and documentary proof of citizenship laws; and challenges to other new legislation restricting voting rights in states like Georgia and Texas. The ACLU Voting Rights Project is currently litigating voter suppression and minority vote dilution cases in over a dozen states, from coast to coast, in every region of the country.

This position is part of a collective bargaining unit. It is represented by ACLU Staff United (ASU).

Reporting to the Director or Deputy Director of the Voting Rights Project, the Staff Attorney or Senior Staff Attorney will be responsible for developing and litigating voting rights cases in state and federal cases

<ul><li>Participate in litigation of constitutional and statutory cases on a wide range of voting rights issues including researching and drafting pleadings, briefs and legal memoranda, engaging in discovery and motion practice, and conducting evidentiary hearings and oral arguments in the trial and appellate courts</li>
<li>Participate in analyzing legislation for potential litigation</li>
<li>Develop new cases, non-litigation advocacy projects and identify and work with potential plaintiffs and witnesses</li>
<li>Work with and advise ACLU state affiliates</li>
<li>Provide technical assistance and expert legal advice to cooperating attorneys, and others who seek assistance on voting rights litigation, legislation, and advocacy</li>
<li>Serve as a resource for ACLU legislative, policy and campaign work and advancing ACLU policy goals through public education, organizing and participating in coalitions</li>
<li>Engage in public speaking and articulating ACLU views to a variety of audiences</li>
<li>Collaborate with staff across the organization, including in other projects within the ACLU&rsquo;s Legal Department, Communications Department, Affiliate and Nationwide Support Initiative, National Political Advocacy Department, Strategy Office, and state affiliates to advance voting rights</li>

The ACLU has a litigator scale that determines pay for attorneys in our Legal Department. The range of salaries are the following, based on year of law school graduation (please consult the hiring manager for specific salary details, based on individual circumstances)
