The Human Resources Director will help to make Camp Tecumseh YMCA an employer of choice in the camping industry and the state of Indiana. This position works to establish and implement best practices in recruiting, hiring, training, recognizing, and evaluating staff members to serve the thousands of campers and guests who visit Camp Tecumseh YMCA each year. The organization size fluctuates seasonally and this role supports approximately 42 full-time staff and 380 seasonal support staff. The Human Resources Director serves to train, advise, and assist Department Heads and the Camp Tecumseh Leadership to implement best practices while steering the organization away from undue risk. Job functions can be generally categorized as 70% HR Generalist or Administrative / 20% Recruitment / 5% Employee Relations / 5% Compliance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Serve as a partner to the CEO and the Leadership Team, providing strategic leadership to attract, develop and retain the best available talent
  • Provide overall management and guidance in Human Resource in the areas of performance management, employee relations, career development, retention, training, leadership development, and succession planning
  • Partner with all departments and Leadership Team in identifying new avenues for staff recruitment and implementing plans to recruit a diverse staff in all departments
  • Provide or facilitate training for Department Heads, and other appropriate staff, in all areas of compliance
  • Partner with Department Heads to continuously improve effective employee onboarding programs. Ensure the onboarding and onboarding process of all staff is followed consistently.
  • Ensure best practices and regular evaluations are conducted in a timely manner
  • Ensure employees stay up-to-date on required certifications and training.
  • Manage employee recognition program
  • Advise and, where appropriate, implement progressive employee correction including ensuring a respectful and legally compliant process
  • Serve as a resource for all employees in resolving conflict or disagreements
  • Remain knowledgeable of industry trends and employment legislation and ensure organization’s compliance
  • Assist CEO and CFO with recommendations for annual compensation review
  • Annually review and make recommendations to the CEO for updating and improving policies and procedures including Employee Handbook and Job Descriptions.
  • Oversee staff surveys and assessments programs to gain insight on staff feedback, engagement and satisfaction; ensure information gained is analyzed, communicated and as appropriate incorporated into strategies
  • All other duties as assigned for the best interest of the organization

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position provides advice and guidance to supervisors at all levels of the organization. Works in conjunction with the Business Director.

Qualifications & Skills Requirements

Required Education/License/Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, human resources, or related field
  • Must be able to pass background checks including but not limited to: social security (identity), education, and previous employment verifications, personal/professional references, professional license verification, criminal background check, motor vehicle record, and/or a credit check under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FRCA) as a requirement of continued employment.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and the ability to meet the minimum requirements set by the company insurance carrier at all times.

Preferred Education

  • SHRM-CP or PHR certification

Required Experience

  • 3+ years human resources experience
  • Experience working with recruitment and retention
  • Experience working with multiple staff levels, including administrative and front line staff
  • Working knowledge of computer programs, including Microsoft Office Suite and Google Workspace

Preferred Experience

  • Experience and strong skills in Excel
  • Experience with Google Suite
  • Experience working with databases and pulling reports

Requirements

  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Must be an individual with integrity, and the ability to look at the big picture of Camp Tecumseh’s mission. Must have a passion for working with youth
  • Must be an individual with a growth mindset and always learning mentality that is looking to improve and add to the existing culture of Camp Tecumseh
  • Must have excellent communication skills which includes speaking, reading, listening, and writing to collaborate with team members as well as external parties
  • Must be a dependable self-starter that meets strict timelines, has attention to detail, is results oriented and has excellent organizational skills
  • Must be someone who can develop and maintain relationships with those from all walks of life while having an engaging manner about them that exudes a warm and positive way of thinking
  • Must be flexible and adaptable in the presence of unforeseen circumstances with the ability to problem solve
  • Must have knowledge of computers, Microsoft Office skills, and email
  • Must be able to demonstrate capacity to work independently without close oversight, while also a team player who will productively engage with others at varying levels of seniority internally and externally
  • Must be able to facilitate and follow through on tasks while collaborating with different department heads
  • Must be able to utilize a performance management system and provide feedback to always look for improvement
  • Must be willing to be trained to drive camp vehicles
  • Must be able (or willing to be trained) to operate a golf cart or LSV (low-speed vehicle) in accordance with safety laws around Camp Tecumseh property
