Overview

We're looking to hire for our Data side of our AI team at Speechify. This role is responsible for all aspects of data collection to support our model training operations. We are able to build high-quality datasets at petabyte-scale and low cost through a tight integration of infrastructure, engineering, and research work. We are looking for a skilled Software Engineer to join us.

What You'll Do

<li>Be scrappy to find new sources of audio data and bring it into our ingestion pipeline</li>
<li>Operate and extend the cloud infrastructure for our ingestion pipeline, currently running on GCP and managed with Terraform.</li>
<li>Collaborate closely with our Scientists to shift the cost/throughput/quality frontier, delivering richer data at bigger scale and lower cost to power our next-generation models.</li>
<li>Collaborate with others on the AI Team and Speechify Leadership to craft the AI Team's dataset roadmap to power Speechify's next-generation consumer and enterprise products.</li>
</ul>
An Ideal Candidate Should Have
<ul>
<li>BS/MS/PhD in Computer Science or a related field.</li>
<li>5+ years of industry experience in software development.</li>
<li>Proficiency with bash/Python scripting in Linux environments</li>
<li>Proficiency in Docker and Infrastructure-as-Code concepts and professional experience with at least one major Cloud Provider (we use GCP)</li>
<li>Experience with web crawlers, large-scale data processing workflows is a plus</li>

Your primary focus will be the design, development and production operation of autonomous and semi-autonomous agents for software delivery, platform operations, service reliability, security and engineering productivity. You will treat agents as production software: versioned, tested, observable, secure, cost-controlled and accountable. Working across Platform Engineering, Architecture, Security, Data and product teams, you will turn high-value operational workflows into reliable agentic products with clear human oversight, measurable outcomes and safe rollback. 
Principal Accountabilities<ul><li>
Design, build and operate the enterprise agentic platform, including orchestration, runtime services, model routing, memory, identity and policy enforcement.</li><li>

AI is a key investment area for Kraken Technologies as we look to expand our existing capabilities. A crucial part of this is broadening the foundational infrastructure to enable teams across the organisation to use AI effectively to accelerate our mission.
You&rsquo;ll work in the Agent Safety/Evals team, a new sub-team within AI Foundations. We build the shared platforms, harnesses, and guardrails that enable engineering and product teams to safely, reliably, and deterministically use machine learning and generative AI agents for internal systems and workflows across the business. This is a delivery-focused team that sits at the intersection of engineering and delivery, focusing on empowering our internal users.
The Role
We&rsquo;re hiring a Lead Software Engineer to head our newly formed Agent Safety/Evals team. As AI agents take on more autonomous tasks across Kraken's internal workflows, this role is critical to ensuring they do so securely and predictably.
This is a leadership role focused on constraining our internally facing AI agents to an expected operation space and guaranteeing system reliability.
You will define the technical strategy for how we evaluate models, enforce safety guardrails, and govern AI behavior across internal platforms, skills, and harnesses. You&rsquo;ll work closely with the broader AI Foundations team and engineers across Kraken to ensure that our push for rapid AI adoption in internal tooling never compromises on security, determinism, or quality.
What you'll own<ul><li>
Lead the technical direction for internal agent safety: Design and implement systems focused on the reliability, security, and determinism of LLMs and autonomous agents, constraining them strictly to expected operational spaces within our internal ecosystems.</li><li>
Build robust evaluation frameworks: Develop scalable harnesses and evals tailored to internal workflows and skills. You will be responsible for asking the right types of questions about the quality and reproducibility of our evals, while engineering the systems to measure them robustly.</li><li>
Implement guardrails and governance: Create and enforce pre- and post-generation guardrails, managing the overarching governance of AI models operating within internal tools and platforms.</li><li>
Drive AI security and observability: Build out dedicated auth/permissions for internal AI agents, establish deep monitoring/observability pipelines, and define incident response protocols for AI-specific anomalies.</li><li>
Verification and Red Teaming: Lead continuous verification efforts and red teaming exercises to proactively identify vulnerabilities, prompt injections, or unpredictable behaviours in our internal AI implementations.</li><li>
Operate in AWS: Deploy, run, and support high-throughput, low-latency safety services for internal use cases; make sensible architecture/cost tradeoffs; partner effectively with platform/techops/security stakeholders.</li></ul>
 What you bring to the party<ul><li>
Strong technical leadership: Proven experience leading technical initiatives or teams, capable of setting the technical vision for complex, ambiguous domains.</li><li>
Deep software engineering fundamentals: Senior/advanced capability in designing secure components end-to-end, testing thoroughly, and reasoning heavily about system design, concurrency, and architecture tradeoffs. (Python preferred).</li><li>
Expertise in AI Evaluation and Safety: A highly critical thinker who understands the nuances of LLM behavior. You must be comfortable interrogating the quality of AI outputs and deeply experienced in building harnesses to measure it reproducibly.</li><li>
Security and Governance mindset: Experience with threat modeling, authentication, red teaming, or building guardrails for internal systems, tooling, or platforms.</li><li>
Cloud experience (AWS): Comfortable running internal services, owning reliability/scalability, and collaborating with platform/techops/security partners.</li><li>
Excellent communication: Able to synthesize complex safety and eval metrics into actionable insights for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.</li></ul>

This new hub reinforces Manchester’s position as a key technology centre for Bauer Media Audio, alongside its existing locations. We’re creating a new engineering team to build innovative business-critical solutions that will power Bauer Media’s audio platform of the future. Our team is built around squads, each aligned to a distinct value stream, with a layer of cross-squad roles – people whose expertise and support spans the whole team. Each squad will be led by a Product Manager and Lead Engineer, working in partnership and jointly accountable for their squad's work and outcomes. Squads are intentionally small – typically around five to six engineers – keeping them focused, collaborative, and able to move quickly.  As a Senior Software Engineer, you’ll play a pivotal role in laying the technical foundations of this new engineering team. You’ll lead hands-on development of infrastructure and prototyping work, mentor engineers, and collaborate across disciplines to deliver secure, resilient, and high-performing systems.
 Working closely with your squad, you will ensure the squad's work aligns with our technical direction and product priorities, contributing to a culture of continuous improvement, shared ownership, and engineering excellence. Your Role
 
Build and deliver Develop and maintain features and services across the platform, taking end-to-end ownership of your work from design through to deployment. Contribute to early-stage prototyping and infrastructure work, helping to shape the foundations of the platform.
 
Shape technical direction Contribute to architectural decisions within your squad, sharing your experience and perspective to inform technical choices. Collaborate with your Lead Engineer and product colleagues to ensure your work aligns with the squad's technical direction and delivery goals.
 Mentor and support Support the growth of junior engineers through code review, pairing, and knowledge sharing — helping to build a team where everyone improves together. Play your part in growing the team — contributing to interviews and helping new engineers get up to speed quickly.
 Champion quality and operational excellence Champion DevOps practices, CI/CD, and a culture of automation and observability as a natural part of how you build. Lead on testing strategies and uphold security standards day to day. Participate in incident management rotas, providing hands-on technical support and clear communication during high-pressure situations.
 
What We're Looking For
 
Experience of some but not necessarily all of the following: 
Technical capability
 
Solid hands-on engineering experience, with active proficiency across frontend and backend development – enough to lead by example and contribute to technical decisions. Experience with our core stack — a Java Spring Boot, AWS, Kubernetes and Kafka back end, with a TypeScript/React front end. Experience designing and building services within a microservices or domain-driven architecture — defining service boundaries and working with asynchronous, event-driven communication (e.g. via Kafka) — and an understanding of how those decisions play out once services are running in production. CI/CD, containerisation, and modern DevOps practices applied as part of everyday delivery. Security best practices embedded in day-to-day development. An interest in AI-assisted development tooling and how it can improve productivity and code quality.
 
Collaboration and communication
 
Experience mentoring engineers and supporting their growth, with an awareness of how to adapt your approach to different people and experience levels. Strong communication skills – able to collaborate across disciplines and articulate technical ideas clearly to non-technical colleagues. A habit of documenting decisions and sharing knowledge across the team.
 
Industry and delivery experience
 
Experience working in a product-led, agile software delivery environment. Incident management experience or familiarity with on-call responsibilities. Media, audio streaming, or consumer platform experience is a plus.
 
Working Pattern and Location
 This is a permanent, hybrid, full-time role with an in-office presence twice a week in our Manchester hub. Like all roles in the team, this one includes participation in incident management rotas – we schedule these collaboratively, taking into account everyone's responsibilities and commitments outside of work.
