Position Summary:

Provides underwriting support, counsel, and authorization to company personnel, and agents related to the issuance of real estate title insurance commitments and policies. Utilizes underwriting standards and guidelines within delegated authority limits, to underwrite the issuance of title insurance 
Provides guidance to company personnel in the performance of real estate settlement services

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

<li>Determine the conditions of the title and insurability by considering the effect of documents such as deeds, mechanics liens, tax liens, judgments, assessments, probates and other matters of record</li>
<li>Protect the company from risk by analyzing recorded documents for ownership accuracy, legal description precision, and potential impact on title. Explain chain of title, exceptions, and requirements to customers and managers</li>
<li>Recognize title defects and formulate curative solution</li>
<li>Assess risks and liabilities that may jeopardize the company, and bring these matters to the attention of the local title manager, state title manager or senior underwriting counsel, or chief underwriting counsel, as appropriate.</li>
<li>Review surveys prepared on properties and other proposed documents to be insured such as mortgages, mortgage modifications, etc.</li>
<li>Work closely with the title agent and escrow staff to meet deadlines for closings and assist with answering questions related to issuance of the title commitment and policies</li>
<li>Perform other duties assigned by management.</li>

Required

<li>Juris Doctor (JD) required; licensed attorney in good standing in the state of employment with t5+ years title underwriting or related real estate law experience preferred</li>
<li>Must be familiar with real estate law</li>

<li>General knowledge of Federal and State regulations related to real estate title insurance and settlement services</li>

The Associate Counsel, Real Estate &amp; Commercial will assist in handling a variety of real estate transactions and legal matters related to retail and corporate properties, as well as commercial contracts for the Americas region. The retail and commercial work is focused primarily in North America, whereas the corporate work is global. This individual will be an integral team member of the various real estate functions within the Est&eacute;e Lauder Companies. <div>We are looking for special counsel or associates with at least six years of law firm experience to join our market-leading and growing Real Estate Department in either NY or DC. Candidate must have significant experience representing lenders in commercial real estate loans (construction loan experience preferred but not required) and be committed to focusing at least 60% of their time on lender-side work. Candidates should have outstanding academic credentials, comparable law firm experience, and excellent written and oral communication skills.

The Firm pays market salaries to our attorneys. As such, below is the current associate base salary scale:
<ul><li>1st year: $225,000</li></ul>
<ul><li>2nd year: $235,000</li></ul>
<ul><li>3rd year: $260,000</li></ul>
<ul><li>4th year: $310,000</li></ul>
<ul><li>5th year: $365,000</li></ul>
<ul><li>6th year: $390,000</li></ul>
<ul><li>7th year: $420,000</li></ul>
<ul><li>8th year: $435,000</li></ul>
