The MGB Cancer Institute is seeking a full-time Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) to join the Infusion Unit and ambulatory practices at Mass General Hospital in Boston, MA. The Infusion Unit APP Specialist will work in a recently developed role embedded within our adult infusion unit to serve as an infusion unit first responder, promote infusion services access and efficiency, provide oncology urgent care/symptom management and provide generalist coverage within our ambulatory hematologic malignancies programs for anticipated leaves and absences.

Join a large and supportive ambulatory oncology and infusion service line Advanced Practice Team in a role that specializes in the care of patients with a variety of medical oncology diagnoses. With an interdisciplinary team approach, this provider will promote a collaborative relationship between providers, professional nurses, research personnel and administrative staff, to provide safe, quality care in compliance with clinical trial protocols across the care continuum.

APP Responsibilities:

<ul><li>While on the adult infusion unit, the APP oversees the care of patients with hematologic and oncologic disorders, serves as a first responder for acute reactions and medical emergencies, partners with primary disease center providers to care for complex oncology patients awaiting hospital admission and collaborates with the Cancer Institute weekend first responder team to provide access for urgent evaluation and symptom management during off-hours.
</li><li>The NP/PA is also responsible for collaborative care of the patient with benign hematological disorders receiving care in the adult infusion unit.
</li><li>While in the cancer institute ambulatory practices the APP Specialist is responsible for the care of oncology patients in the outpatient setting, specializing in either solid tumor malignancies or hematologic malignancies in partnership with primary disease center APPs, physicians, practices nurses and administrative support team members.
</li><li>Flexibility in scheduling as this position may require weekend, holiday and evening coverage as well as variable weekday assignments.

About this role:<br>
The solid tumor hematology oncology NP provides comprehensive ambulatory care to one or more disease specific medical oncology patient populations. With an interdisciplinary team approach, this provider promotes a collaborative relationship between all providers, professional nurses and administrative staff, to ensure continuity of patient care and efficient use of resources. The NP is responsible for the assessment and management of solid tumor medical oncology patients, including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions and development and implementation of appropriate plans of care across the trajectory of illness for patients.<br>
In addition to providing direct and indirect patient care, the hematology oncology APP serves as a role model for professional advanced practice and participates in the professional development of the team through teaching, committee involvement or quality and safety initiatives. The hematology oncology APP will provide thorough, compassionate, culturally sensitive clinical care and should demonstrate operational flexibility and strong leadership, problem-solving and communication skills in order to work effectively with other members of the team.<br>

Join a dynamic inpatient oncology team. Work within one of our two subspecialty groups with APPs that specialize in either 1) solid tumor, caring for an oncology patient population who are admitted for medical complications, new diagnoses, and treatment-related side effects, or 2) hematologic malignancies, caring for patients receiving bone marrow transplant and cellular therapies. This role offers the perfect blend of autonomy and collaboration. Full-time (40 hrs) 3-13-hour shifts plus one hour of education every week. Shifts are 6am-7pm and 6pm-7am with one hour overlap for sign out and to sort out pending patient care issues.<br>

Ellison 14 ICU patient populations are adult complex surgical patients including burns along with acutely ill medical patients (i.e. both SICU and MICU-type patients). While Ellison 14 is the official &lsquo;Burn ICU&rsquo; at MGH and has a storied history of caring for critically ill burn patients, currently, thermal burns constitute a minority of our patients (&lt;10%).

Ellison 14 ICU has a &lsquo;closed ICU&rsquo; model. All patients on the unit are cared for by the same team. Our APPs are the primary ICU care providers, supported by admitting surgical teams and consultants. Our multispecialty care team model, in-line with other ICUs at MGB, is based on responding clinicians (APPs and residents) supervised by 24/7 in-house attending ICU staff physicians and supported by critical care fellows.

The job includes, but is not limited to critical care interventions, intensive care monitoring, diagnosing and prescribing treatments, therapeutics, and medications, coordinating referrals and discharging patients from the ICU. We emphasize and expect responsible, collaborative decision-making from our APPs, within their full scope of supervised practice. We encourage procedural excellence.

In collaboration with a multidisciplinary care team, they would be responsible for establishing, implementing, and evaluating the ICU course of treatment and the coordination and communication of the treatment plan. The APP will have a key role in patient and family teaching, while promoting competent, compassionate nursing care for patients and relatives. They will serve as a role model for professional nursing practice.

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) is responsible for providing primary care for a caseload of patients. As an advanced practice nurse, the NP has received specialized training and education in the management of the acute care. The NP is uniquely qualified to meet the responsibilities of the role which include, but are not limited to: Comprehensive assessment, diagnosis and treatment; Prescribing and performance of diagnostic and therapeutic interventions; Supervise protocols and insure compliance of studies; Development, evaluation and modifications of treatment plans as patient condition warrants; Review/prescribe therapeutic orders for patients; and Participate in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as indicated by patient condition. The NP practices in collaboration with the attending physician and other members of the multidisciplinary team to insure optimal patient outcomes.
