MassDOT interns have the chance to work with some of the most highly respected engineers and specialists in the state. Duties include going on site visits, working on exciting and significant projects, and delivering quality work that has a positive and lasting influence on transportation in the Commonwealth. The internship also provides an opportunity to network with professionals across the state.</p><p>
The Engineering Internship Program typically runs 12 weeks from June through the end of August. Students must commit to a full‐time schedule for the internship period.</p><p><b>
Duties and Responsibilities</b></p><p>
Engineering interns will be assigned throughout the Aeronautics Division and may assist MassDOT engineers in the following areas:</p><ul><li>
Preparing and reviewing plans, designs, specifications, and cost estimates for airport construction and/or maintenance projects.</li><li>
Reviewing engineering pavement designs, design reports, and geotechnical reports for airport projects.</li><li>
Reviewing environmental reports and planning studies related to airport projects</li><li>
Conducting airspace reviews in accordance with Chapter 90 requirements.</li><li>
Reviewing Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) advisory circulars and applying standards to engineering projects.</li><li>
Performing calculations related to airfield geometry, aircraft navigational aid siting, and airport runway/taxiway lighting.</li><li>
Analyzing change orders and supplemental agreements for design and construction projects.</li><li>
Conducting field investigations in order to gather information needed to resolve construction, maintenance, environmental, or traffic problems.</li><li>
Reviewing construction estimates and payment requisitions.</li><li>
Reviewing payment vouchers for correctness for engineering and construction projects.</li><li>
Inputting data into the Aeronautics Division project management portal.</li><li>
Inspecting construction operations, such as drainage, excavation, paving, lighting, signage, and pavement markings to ensure work is being performed according to project specifications.</li><li>
Review engineering scopes of work and preform independent fee analysis.</li><li>
Assisting in reviewing environmental compliance and permitting; including stormwater, wetlands, and wildlife.</li><li>
Reviewing grant application and preparing submissions for grant funding assistance.</li><li>
Assisting with engineering related drone flights and acting as a visual observer.</li><li>
Preparing and analyzing data from drone flights to determine pavement condition index for airfield pavements and obstruction analysis for runway approaches.</li></ul><p><b>

Familiarity with AutoCAD and ArcGIS</li><li>

The intern will be part of the Coordination and Engagement team which leads DOER&rsquo;s communications efforts, including media relations, stakeholder engagement, public events, web content, and social media.</p><p>
</p><p>The intern will work on a variety of public education and awareness initiatives across the breadth of DOER policies including renewable energy, energy efficiency, siting and permitting, and general energy policy. To support these policy initiatives, the intern will work with DOER staff to develop various public-facing content, including one-pagers, informational graphics, and technical assistance documents that communicate the complexity of DOER&rsquo;s policies and procedures in plain language for a general audience. The intern will coordinate with the Coordination and Engagement team as other staff update the website and distribute social media, press, and other related content.</p><p>
</p><p>A strong candidate will have solid graphical and written communication skills, including experience using a graphic design platform or software, and good organizational skills. An ideal candidate will have some experience in science communication, especially in energy, and demonstrated experience designing content that explains complicated concepts simply. Knowledge of, or a desire to learn about, Massachusetts&rsquo; energy priorities and initiatives is a plus. The intern will need to manage multiple projects with concurrent timelines and will need to be proactive, detail oriented, and able to work independently.</p><p><br>
</p><p><b>Responsibilities:</b></p><ul><li><p>
Work with the Deputy Commissioner and DOER Divisions to design and write plain language content from longer written content</p></li><li><p>
Utilize DOER&rsquo;s brand guidance and graphic library to create cohesive designs</p></li><li><p>
Build a template library for future one-pagers, graphics, etc.</p></li><li><p>
Assist the Sitting &amp; Permitting team with designing reader-friendly resources</p></li><li><p>
Complete other tasks as needed</p></li></ul><p><b>
</b></p><p><b>Preferred Qualifications:</b></p><ul><li><p>
Work or academic experience in communications, community engagement, digital media, graphic design, multimedia journalism, or a related field.</p></li><li><p>
Proficient with graphic design software.</p></li><li><p>
Knowledge of Microsoft suite platforms (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, etc.).</p></li><li><p>
Strong interpersonal skills and written and verbal communication skills.</p></li><li><p>
Detail-oriented, organized, and able to work collaboratively in a team setting.</p></li><li><p>
An ideal candidate will have some experience in science communication, especially in energy.</p></li><li><p>
Knowledge of or a desire to learn about Massachusetts&rsquo; energy priorities and initiatives is a plus.</p></li></ul><p>
