The MGB Cancer Institute is seeking a full-time Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) to join the Infusion Unit and ambulatory practices at Mass General Hospital in Boston, MA. The Infusion Unit APP Specialist will work in a recently developed role embedded within our adult infusion unit to serve as an infusion unit first responder, promote infusion services access and efficiency, provide oncology urgent care/symptom management and provide generalist coverage within our ambulatory hematologic malignancies programs for anticipated leaves and absences.

Join a large and supportive ambulatory oncology and infusion service line Advanced Practice Team in a role that specializes in the care of patients with a variety of medical oncology diagnoses. With an interdisciplinary team approach, this provider will promote a collaborative relationship between providers, professional nurses, research personnel and administrative staff, to provide safe, quality care in compliance with clinical trial protocols across the care continuum.

APP Responsibilities:

<ul><li>While on the adult infusion unit, the APP oversees the care of patients with hematologic and oncologic disorders, serves as a first responder for acute reactions and medical emergencies, partners with primary disease center providers to care for complex oncology patients awaiting hospital admission and collaborates with the Cancer Institute weekend first responder team to provide access for urgent evaluation and symptom management during off-hours.
</li><li>The NP/PA is also responsible for collaborative care of the patient with benign hematological disorders receiving care in the adult infusion unit.
</li><li>While in the cancer institute ambulatory practices the APP Specialist is responsible for the care of oncology patients in the outpatient setting, specializing in either solid tumor malignancies or hematologic malignancies in partnership with primary disease center APPs, physicians, practices nurses and administrative support team members.
</li><li>Flexibility in scheduling as this position may require weekend, holiday and evening coverage as well as variable weekday assignments.

Education/Certifications:

Mass General Cancer Center specializes in the care of patients with a variety of hematologic malignancies and solid tumor oncologic diagnoses. Our team has a demonstrated history of providing exquisite, evidence-based patient care. This is a fantastic opportunity for an Advanced Practice Provider (NP or PA) to work in an invigorating and collaborative care environment. The medical oncology APP will provide direct and indirect care to ambulatory patients. The NP/PA is responsible for:<br>

Obtaining and coordinating laboratory results, charting of clinical findings in the EMR, orders, nursing instructions, and other required elements.</li><li>Utilizes advanced practice knowledge to identify, prevent or solve complex and/or recurring breast oncology patient care problems.</li><li>Follows and manages patients (in collaboration with MD) enhancing continuity of care.</li><li>Performs (oversees/assures completion of) specialized procedures particular to the select medical oncology population mutually agreed upon with collaborating physician.</li><li>Collaborates with staff and physicians to facilitate a comprehensive plan of care and coordinate resources and write appropriate orders improving access to care, establishing goals for the delivery of care to patients, participating in clinical research, and managing communications between physicians, patients, family, and staff.</li><li>Appreciates complex medication interactions.</li><li>Ensuring appropriate diagnostic procedures occur in a timely matter through careful coordination with other services such as radiology, facilitating various clinic appointments, communicating with patients regarding test results, and providing coverage for the team.</li><li>Educating patients regarding a variety of medical oncology issues associated with local or systemic therapy.</li><li>Indications and interpretation of radiology, pathology, and laboratory results.</li><li>Understands the complex medical environments of cancer patients including, but not limited to, those with advanced malignancy or organ dysfunction.</li><li>Writes orders which are in accord with current guidelines including antineoplastics.</li><li>Maintains and practices in accord with practice guidelines per state and hospital regulations.</li><li>Provides consultation to both nurses and physicians and serves as a resource to staff in area(s) of expertise.</li><li>Collaborates with staff and other health care professionals to meet staff and patient educational needs.</li><li>Monitors patient outcomes in accordance with defined standards of patient care.</li><li>Supports and conducts research efforts to advance knowledge and to promote research-based practice.</li><li>Responsible for own professional growth and maintenance of required credentials.</li></ul>

Join a supportive Advanced Practice Team in a role supporting the MGB Cancer Institute and the Cancer Early Detection and Diagnostics Clinic. This practice specializes in the care of patients at risk for cancer or with a suspicion of cancer. This team was formed to provide patients with opportunities around cancer screening, to work with emerging screening technologies, and to provide access to these technologies in an effort to work towards preventing cancer mortality.

This is a fantastic opportunity for an Advanced Practice Provider (NP or PA) to work in this invigorating and collaborative environment. The early detection APP will provide direct care to outpatients. With a multidisciplinary team approach, this provider will promote a collaborative relationship between providers, professional nurses, and administrative staff, to ensure continuity of patient care and related issues as well as to develop expertise in the field of early detection and diagnostics for those at risk of cancer or with a high suspicion of cancer. Within this role, the advanced practice provider will be responsible for a panel of patients in collaboration with the early detection team. Other responsibilities include caring for patients throughout their continuum of care and fostering collaboration with other professionals within the hospital and clinics to facilitate patient care.<br>

The early detection APP will work with the team to further develop this center and to further focus on decreasing cancer morbidity and mortality through the work around designing, testing, and implementing early cancer detection and diagnostic technologies.

Additionally, this APP will work with the team to ensure workflows are established, diagnostic workups for patients with a suspicion of malignancy are initiated, perform cancer risk assessments, as well as work with the research teams on projects, trials, and other research endeavors.<br>

Work within one of our two subspecialty groups with APPs that specialize in either 1) solid tumor, caring for an oncology patient population who are admitted for medical complications, new diagnoses, and treatment-related side effects, or 2) hematologic malignancies, caring for patients receiving bone marrow transplant and cellular therapies. Full-time (40 hrs) 3-13-hour shifts plus one hour of education every week. Shifts are 6am-7pm and 6pm-7am with one hour overlap for sign out and to sort out pending patient care issues.<br>

Ellison 14 ICU patient populations are adult complex surgical patients including burns along with acutely ill medical patients (i.e. both SICU and MICU-type patients). While Ellison 14 is the official &lsquo;Burn ICU&rsquo; at MGH and has a storied history of caring for critically ill burn patients, currently, thermal burns constitute a minority of our patients (&lt;10%).

Ellison 14 ICU has a &lsquo;closed ICU&rsquo; model. All patients on the unit are cared for by the same team. Our APPs are the primary ICU care providers, supported by admitting surgical teams and consultants. Our multispecialty care team model, in-line with other ICUs at MGB, is based on responding clinicians (APPs and residents) supervised by 24/7 in-house attending ICU staff physicians and supported by critical care fellows.

The job includes, but is not limited to critical care interventions, intensive care monitoring, diagnosing and prescribing treatments, therapeutics, and medications, coordinating referrals and discharging patients from the ICU. We emphasize and expect responsible, collaborative decision-making from our APPs, within their full scope of supervised practice. We encourage procedural excellence.

In collaboration with a multidisciplinary care team, they would be responsible for establishing, implementing, and evaluating the ICU course of treatment and the coordination and communication of the treatment plan. The APP will have a key role in patient and family teaching, while promoting competent, compassionate nursing care for patients and relatives. They will serve as a role model for professional nursing practice.
