</p><p><b>Responsibilities</b></p><ul><li>
Lead complex climate and energy cases before state public utility commissions, state and federal agencies, and state and federal courts.</li><li>
Lead litigation and advocacy efforts, and perform the full range of litigation tasks, including conducting factual investigations, developing legal theories, securing expert testimony, submitting comments, petitions, briefs, and oral arguments.</li><li>
Collaborate in team problem solving, litigation strategy, and project management.</li><li>
Prepare discovery, pleadings, testimony, cross-examination, briefs, and oral arguments in state and federal regulatory proceedings and court proceedings.</li><li>
Collaborate with and oversee the work of technical experts.</li><li>
Work with our media and policy and legislation teams, as well as clients and partners, to leverage legal advocacy to obtain positive change and results.</li><li>
Supervise and mentor Associate Attorneys, interns, and litigation assistants.</li><li>
Collaborate and manage relationships with co-counsel, clients, and coalition partners to investigate, develop, and litigate cases.</li><li>
Join other staff in long-term planning, strategy development, goal setting, and work plan management that advances Earthjustice&rsquo;s work.</li><li>

Qualifications</b></p><ul><li>
Law school graduate admitted, or eligible for admission to the applicable bar within 14 months of employment.</li><li>
6+ years of litigation and legal advocacy experience, working both independently and in a coalition setting, and a background in energy law is strongly preferred.</li><li>
Licensed to practice law in the US jurisdiction in which the attorney will be located, or a willingness and qualifications to apply for membership within fourteen months of employment.</li><li>
Ability to develop cases, manage a litigation docket effectively, lead a litigation team, and work collaboratively with colleagues and partner organizations.</li><li>

Under the supervision of an experienced and licensed attorney, the LCE intern will be exposed to and participate in various legal functions related to law practice in an elder law setting for low-income older persons. They decide who to charge (or not charge) with a crime, what crime to charge, whether to ask that a person sit in jail pending trial, and what sentence to ask for upon conviction (or what alternative remedies to pursue in lieu of prosecution or conviction). Yet, despite this immense power, prosecutors have largely not been the focus of criminal justice reform efforts until recently. Our team helps prosecutors across the country and the communities they serve work to shrink the front end of the system, pursue racial equity, and increase transparency.</p>
<p>
The Senior Research Associate will lead applied quantitative research efforts with selected prosecutors' offices around the country. Core to that work is the analysis of data from prosecutors' administrative case management systems and from community-based organizations that are conducting diversion programs in partnership with those offices. To successfully carry out that core responsibility, the Senior Research Associate should be experienced and comfortable with: making administrative data requests of government agencies and non-governmental organizations or non-profits; managing data construction and data delivery with partners who may not have the relevant expertise to assess data needs or data quality; compiling, cleaning, and documenting what are often disparate, disconnected, or sometimes only semi-structured data files into master datasets for analysis, as well as managing updates to those master datasets as new data become available or necessary; and developing thoughtful analyses of that data through the production of discipline-relevant metrics, univariate, bivariate, and multivariate statistics, and conveying that information effectively to non-researchers. The Senior Research Associate will work on a team of researchers and former prosecutors and public defenders to build a comprehensive understanding of prosecution within a community, using data from district attorneys' offices and diversion program providers to spur policy changes that help shrink the front end of the criminal legal system.<br>

The Senior Research Associate will also provide technical assistance to prosecutors' offices and community-based organizations leading diversion programming to improve their fluency with, and ability to use, data in their criminal justice reform efforts. The Senior Research Associate will contribute to efforts to expand the visibility of prosecutor and community research, including the development and delivery of new products, trainings, convenings, and presentations. They will assume a leadership role within the Reshaping Prosecution research team&mdash;hiring, training, and developing junior researchers&mdash;and will report directly to the Associate Director of Research.</p>

<li>Develop and present IRB applications and ensure that research is conducted to the highest ethical standards, may serve as &quot;Principal Investigator&quot; on research projects requiring this designation</li>

What qualifications are we looking for?</b></h3>
<ul><li>Bachelor's degree and 4 plus years of relevant experience. In lieu of degree requirement, applicable work or life experience may be considered</li>
<li>Relevant work experience in criminal justice, criminal legal reform, or social justice fields</li>
<li>Quantitative research experience, ideally with administrative data not originally collected for quantitative analysis (i.e., incomplete, or even unstructured data, requiring extensive cleaning and reformatting)</li>
<li>Bachelor's degree in statistics, data science , or social science or related fields with training in statistics and social science research methods; or relevant work or academic history</li>
</ul>
<p><b>Preferred</b>:</p>
<ul>
<li>Master's degree in statistics, data science, or social science or related field with training in statistics and social science research methods</li>
<li>Experience with the justice system&mdash;either you were yourself in the system, have a family member who is/was in the system, you worked in the system, or you worked to change the system</li>

The Criminal Division, U.S. Department of Justice is seeking qualified, experienced trial attorneys in the Capital Case Section (CCS) located in Washington, DC.
<br><br>
<b>As a Trial Attorney, the incumbent:</b><br>
Conducts analysis of new cases received from the United States Attorneys' Offices and Department components charging a crime punishable by death. Section attorneys advise the Attorney General's Capital Case Review Committee in its factual and legal evaluation of cases submitted for the Department's decision whether to authorize a capital prosecution.
<br>Litigates all phases of federal capital cases, including pre-trial litigation, selecting death qualified juries, preparing/presenting penalty phase witnesses and evidence, and post-conviction briefing and hearings.
<br>Provides training on the Department's capital case litigation. Section attorneys provide legal, procedural, and policy guidance to United States Attorneys' Offices and Department components handling capital investigations and prosecutions.
<br>In collaboration with United States Attorneys' Offices, Section attorneys advise in the preparation of legal memoranda, such as proposed legislation, amendments, regulations, testimony, briefing materials, public statements, and correspondence on capital punishment issues.
<br>Collects and maintains trial and appellate materials related to federal capital prosecutions. Section attorneys partner with United States Attorneys' Offices in the development and management of current information and materials which act as a resources center for capital prosecutors.
<br>Assists in the development of Department policies and procedures related to federal capital prosecutions.
<br>Qualifications
<br><br>
<b>Required Qualifications:</b> Interested applicants must possess a J.D., or equivalent, degree, be duly licensed and authorized to practice as an attorney under the laws of any State, territory of the United States, or the District of Columbia, and be an active member of the bar in good standing. To qualify at the GS-15 grade level, applicants must have at least four (4) years post J.D. legal experience, one of which was specialized experience at, or equivalent to, the GS-14 grade level. Examples of specialized experience include: independently performing legal analysis; composing pleadings, briefs and other court documents involving unique and/or difficult legal issues in civil or criminal litigation; conducting highly complex civil or criminal litigation; and leading paralegals and support staff.

<b>Preferred Qualifications:</b><br>
Experience in supporting, litigating, and supervising criminal cases in federal or state courts;
<br>Experience handling violent crime cases;
<br>Experience handling federal criminal prosecutions on behalf of the U. S. Department of Justice;
