Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell seeks a highly motivated attorney to join her Office&rsquo;s Consumer Protection Division as an Assistant Attorney General. The Division enforces the Massachusetts Consumer Protection Act (M.G.L. c. 93A) and seeks to protect consumers from abusive practices in debt collection, automobile sales, mortgage lending, and student lending, among many other areas. Racial justice is a strategic priority of the Office, and we aim to serve the most vulnerable consumers in the Commonwealth. 
 
 
Primary Duties : The Assistant Attorney General (AAG) in the Consumer Protection Division will be responsible for identifying problematic business practices that negatively impact consumers, evaluating their suitability for enforcement, and ultimately, investigating and litigating civil actions on behalf of the Commonwealth, where appropriate. The AAG will be expected to develop and implement concrete strategies for remedying industrywide consumer abuses and may also have the opportunity to participate in legislative and regulatory policy development at both the state and federal levels. The AAG may also have opportunities to join civil litigation teams challenging federal actions that harm the Commonwealth and its residents. 
 
 
Position Requirements :

Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell is seeking a highly motivated attorney with extensive prosecutorial experience to join her management team as Division Chief of the Enterprise &amp; Major Crimes Division in the Attorney General&rsquo;s Criminal Bureau. The division is staffed by a group of experienced prosecutors who partner with intelligence analysts, Massachusetts State Police troopers assigned to the Attorney General&rsquo;s Office, and local, state, and federal investigative and enforcement agencies to investigate and prosecute large-scale narcotics trafficking organizations throughout the Commonwealth. 
Primary Duties : The Division Chief will manage the division&rsquo;s Assistant Attorneys General and other staff. Supervisory responsibility will include overseeing the investigation and prosecution of cases, reviewing search warrants sought in connection with investigations, and mentoring division staff and assisting them with advanced skills development. The Division Chief will also handle his or her own caseload of primarily narcotics and firearms-related matters from investigation through sentencing. The work involves extensive collaboration with law enforcement, grand jury investigations throughout the Commonwealth, complex motion practice, and frequent appearances before the Commonwealth&rsquo;s District and Superior Courts for motions, pleas, and trials. The Division Chief will be expected to communicate effectively with outside agencies, and to maintain and cultivate those relationships.

Qualifications

(or equivalent) legal experience or other relevant experience. A minimum of 3 years post-J.D. (or equivalent) legal or other relevant experience is required.
 
Preferred qualifications: Five years of experience as a criminal attorney, superior academic credentials, and experience briefing and arguing before federal appellate courts preferred.
 
United States citizenship is required.

A clearly defined substantive supervisory structure will elevate the skills of the attorneys in the Economic Fairness Unit and improve the consistency, accuracy, and depth of the advice and mentoring given to both VLP staff and pro bono attorneys, to better serve our clients and community.&#8239;&#8239;&#8239;The supervising attorney will also rotate as an on-call attorney at our call center.REQUIRED&#8239;QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: <ul><li>Law degree from an accredited law school</li><li>Admission to and good standing in Massachusetts bar</li><li>2+ years in full-time in consumer and bankruptcy law, including litigation.</li><li>2+ years supervising legal work</li><li>Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite</li><li>Strong written and verbal communication skills</li><li>Strong organizational skills and ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines</li><li>Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and with staff at outside organizations</li><li>Ability to effectively engage with the private bar to recruit, train, and mentor volunteer attorneys</li><li>Ability to use a computer several hours per day</li><li>Ability to communicate in person, by telephone, and by computer</li><li>Ability to travel to courthouses and other clinic locations in Greater Boston</li></ul>ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO: <ul><li>Maintain expertise in consumer, bankruptcy and employment law</li><li>Lead weekly unit case reviews and provide oversight on follow-through</li><li>Effectively and efficiently handle a small caseload</li><li>Supervise weekly consumer clinics and other clinics as needed</li><li>Provide substantive law supervision at clinics and as needed to unit staff attorneys, including answering questions and reviewing advice and drafts of documents and closing cases</li><li>Develop training for staff on consumer, bankruptcy and employment matters as well as general litigation</li><li>Supervise staff attorneys in the Economic Fairness Unit, including reviewing and approving time for payroll, approving time-off requests, and approving training requests</li><li>Supervise and mentor paralegals, interns, and pro bono attorneys</li><li>Review cases for merit and alignment with priorities</li><li>Recruit and maintain relationships with volunteers from the private bar</li><li>Conduct trainings for volunteers, often during evening hours</li><li>Prepare cases for pro bono assignment, including reviewing memos and documents</li><li>Assist in placement of cases with pro bono attorneys</li><li>Monitor pro bono cases to ensure quality and competent representation</li><li>Participation in legal aid coalitions and collaborations</li><li>Assist with grant applications and reports</li><li>Other responsibilities as needed</li></ul>Volunteer Lawyers Project is committed to a diverse work environment and is proud to be an Equal Opportunity Employer.
