<br>The Appeals Division of the Attorney General’s Office represents the State, its agencies, officers, employees and interests, before the state and federal appellate courts in civil and criminal cases, and in federal district courts in habeas corpus proceedings. Deputy Attorneys General assigned to the Civil Appeals Section primarily represent the State of Indiana in appeals brought in civil cases before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, Indiana Supreme Court, and Court of Appeals of Indiana, as well as handling other appellate-related matters. Supervising Deputies also provide supervision to several Deputy Attorneys General as assigned.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
<br>The Civil Appeals Section represents the interests of the State of Indiana, state agencies and state officials in appeals of civil decisions entered by state and federal trial judges and in the direct appeals to the Court of Appeals of Indiana from final determinations of certain administrative agencies. These appeals involve a wide range of legal subject matters arising from activities of Indiana state government, including but not limited to: constitutional challenges to state statutes and agency policies and rules, judicial review of agency orders, child welfare, torts, civil rights, employment, labor law, environmental and natural resources law, eminent domain, contract, child support, forfeiture, and habeas corpus matters involving prison discipline. A Deputy Attorney General (DAG) assigned to the Section is carries a substantial caseload and is responsible for representing the State’s interests within the guidelines and supervision of the office. The Deputy is responsible for all aspects of the appeal: confirming deadlines and scheduling, communicating with stakeholders, motion practice, briefing, oral argument, and post-decision review and proceedings. All representation must conform with the Rules of Appellate Procedure, division style and format practice, office policies, professional conduct rules and expectations, and all other applicable laws, standards and guidelines. The Deputy is primarily responsible for the cases assigned, until an appearance is withdrawn or employment has concluded.Additionally, a Supervising Deputy assists the Section Chief in reviewing briefs, formulating appellate litigation strategy, and coordinating with the litigation division and other areas of the office as assigned. Education and Experience:</b></p><ul><li>
J.D. Degree from an accredited law school and a member of good standing of the Indiana bar (or have a pending application).</li><li>
Applicants must also be admitted to the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana or secure admission within 60 days of accepting the position.</li><li>
Demonstrated commitment to public service and a strong academic record.</li><li>
Commitment to fairness and a strong work ethic, ability to manage a highly demanding workload, and sound problem-solving and decision-making skills.</li><li>
Prior work experience in family law, in the form of a clerkship, paid employment, or internship, is preferred, but not required</li></ul><p></p><p><b><br>

The Legal Intern will work closely with the General Counsel on a variety of projects related to museum legal matters. This role provides exposure to real-world legal work in a nonprofit environment and offers practical experience in drafting and reviewing documents, conducting research, and supporting organizational compliance needs.</p><br>

POTENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:</b></p>

<ul><li>Draft and review legal documents, including contracts and transaction documents.</li></ul>
<ul><li>Perform citation checks, proofread others&rsquo; work, and assist with updating legal form documents.</li></ul>
<ul><li>Conduct legal research; gather and analyze statutes, court decisions, and legal articles; and apply findings to issues including intellectual property and employment.</li></ul>
<ul><li>Organize and maintain files and assist with updating the contract review database.</li></ul>
<ul><li>Assist in preparing PowerPoint presentations on legal topics.</li></ul>
<ul><li>Compose correspondence and reports for internal staff and assist with mailings to external parties.</li></ul>
<ul><li>Liaise with various museum departments to collect contracts, information, and data.</li></ul>
<ul><li>Provide occasional administrative support to the General Counsel, including scanning and filing.</li></ul></div><br>

REQUIREMENTS:</b></p>

<ul><li>Jr or above standing and actively pursuing a Bachelor&rsquo;s degree (relevant fields include but are not limited to: Legal Studies, Political Science, History, Business, English, etc.).</li></ul>
<ul><li>Be available to work at least 15 hours per week.</li></ul>
<ul><li>Demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.</li></ul>
<ul><li>Have excellent writing skills and provide a writing sample as part of your application.</li></ul>
<ul><li>Interact with visitors and co-workers in a supportive, positive, and friendly manner.</li></ul>
<ul><li>Maintain behavior patterns acceptable to co-workers and the general museum culture.</li></ul>
