About this job:<br>
The Cardiac Electrophysiology (EP) Nurse Practitioner (NP) will practice in three settings: inpatient, outpatient/ambulatory, and procedural settings. The NP will be involved in all aspects of care with the primary goal of ensuring the effective delivery of care to patients.<br>
<br>
Inpatient and peri-procedural care<br>
<ul><li>The Nurse Practitioner will be responsible for obtaining and coordinating the following general items: history and physical, laboratory results, charting of clinical findings, registry documentation, orders, sedation assessment, nursing instructions, consent, and other required elements. The NP, in collaboration with the Laboratory Flow Managers, may be asked to help coordinate admissions and transfers to the hospital. The NP will perform pre-procedure assessments in the recovery room/holding area or outpatient setting as needed.</li><li>The Nurse Practitioner (NP) will be knowledgeable about the Cardiac Electrophysiology Laboratory scheduling, procedure room turnover and availability of resources. They will be called upon to manage patients after their procedures (as appropriate and in collaboration with the consult Fellow) while they await transfer to patient floor or discharge. The NP will assist in family liaison.</li><li>Following procedures, the Nurse Practitioner (NP) will manage vascular access, monitor and manage arrhythmias, pacing, drug therapy, O2 therapy, and other non-cardiac medications, under the supervision of the attending physician. The NP will assist in the evaluation and management of clinical events such as fever, altered hemodynamics, CHF, pulmonary complications, abrupt vessel closure, arrhythmias, access site complications and others. The NP will assist in transfers to and from the intensive care units.</li><li>The Nurse Practitioner (NP) will perform patient education regarding discharge including preventive care and risk factor reduction. They will write discharge orders, prescriptions and complete discharge summaries in collaboration with the attending physician. The NP will act as a liaison between the attending cardiologist and family members and will schedule follow-up care as necessary, including VNA if needed.</li></ul><br>
Ambulatory care<br>
<ul><li>The Nurse Practitioner (NP) will collaborate with the team in preparing patients for admissions/procedures. Educate patients regarding a variety of electrophysiology treatments and procedures. Works collaboratively with nursing/clinic staff to assist in the care of patients. This includes, but is not limited to: symptom management, evaluation and management, prescription writing, ordering and interpreting diagnostic studies with review by attending MD, patient calls and questions related to electrophysiology clinical care. The NP will provide care via in person clinic visits, virtual clinic visits, and telehealth.</li></ul>
Procedural care<br>
<ul><li>The Nurse Practitioner (NP) will be responsible for many aspects of care under the supervision of the attending physician, including but not limited to: cardioversions, suturing, cardiac subcutaneous monitor implant/explant, first assisting during diagnostic EP studies/ablations, device implantation and research procedures performed in the EP laboratory, OR and other clinical areas, as well as fluid and electrolyte management, nutrition, pain management, transfusion therapy, anticoagulation management, education, and post-discharge planning.</li></ul><br>
General/Working Conditions<br>
<ul><li>The Nurse Practitioner (NP) participates in departmental and organizational committees and programs as appropriate and attends all required meetings, in-services, and professional trainings. Remains actively involved in continuing education with a commitment to self and departmental growth. Identifies areas for professional growth. Formulates professional goals, objectives and methods for accomplishing these. Supports initiatives within BWH, the Department of Medicine and the Cardiovascular Division.</li><li>Work settings may include ambulatory clinics and treatment rooms, inpatient areas, intensive care units, operating rooms, and/or procedural areas. There may be loud noises, noxious odors, and temperature extremes. A large portion of the workday may be spent either standing or walking and the position may require heavy lifting of equipment and patients.</li></ul>

<ul><li>The Nurse Practitioner (NP) may be exposed to radiation, potentially infectious bodily fluids, and sharp instruments such as needles and scalpels. Knowledge of Universal Precautions and proper use of surgical sharp instruments may be required. The consequences of contamination from bodily fluids or from being stuck with a sharp instrument include the possibility of physical harm to the employee or others. BWH is a fast paced, dynamic environment with a very large and complex patient volume; exposure to stress in the workplace is expected.</li></ul><p></p><p><b><br>
Job Summary</b></p>
The Nurse Practitioner is an advanced practice registered nurse who has acquired specialized knowledge and skills through completion of a nurse practitioner program. The practitioner has the credentials to function in an expanded nursing role and is responsible for the daily management of selected patients. The practitioner has responsibility for the assessment and management of patients, including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, and the continuous implementation and evaluation of an appropriate plan of care. The Nurse Practitioner works with their collaborating physician in accordance with mutually developed practice guidelines, members of the care team, and is responsible to the Nursing Director or Executive Nursing Director for the area for issues specific to the discipline of nursing.

When you join our team you will work with a supportive group of Advanced Practice Providers, Attending Physicians and Fellows. You will be responsible for taking care of Pre and Post-operative highly acute cardiac patients, along with children who have cardiac medical needs in the intensive care unit. We have an extensive Orientation Program to prepare you for taking care of these critically ill patients and to thrive here at Boston Children&rsquo;s. The Cardiac Rehab Nurse, under the general supervision of the Nursing Director, functions as an ambulatory practice nurse for the Cardiac Rehab Program.

<ul><li>Collaborate with attending physicians, mid-level practitioners, administrative support staff, and other members of the patient care team to achieve optimal clinical outcomes.</li><li>Works with cardiac patients who have heart disease or have had a procedure to treat their heart disease.
</li><li>Monitors patients for changes in their heart conditions and collaborate with a team to develop individualized care plans.</li></ul><br>
RESPONSIBILITIES:

<ul><li>Provide nursing care for patients during cardiac rehabilitation, PAD supervised exercise and cardiac lifestyle programs.</li><li>Organize, prioritize and manage your own panel of 20-30 patients, with support from a multidisciplinary care team of exercise physiologists, nutritionists, and cardiologists.</li><li>Perform initial intake interviews for patients interested in the program. Develop a personalized treatment plan for each patient.</li><li>Oversee patient treatment plans and provide expertise in case management including cholesterol and dietary management, smoking cessation, and behavior/lifestyle modifications.</li><li>Supervise exercise sessions. Use telemetry to monitor and record patients&rsquo; heart activity for inappropriate responses.</li><li>Collaborate with team Exercise Physiologist to prescribe ACSM protocols for exercise in the cardiac population.
