About this role:<br>
The solid tumor hematology oncology NP provides comprehensive ambulatory care to one or more disease specific medical oncology patient populations. With an interdisciplinary team approach, this provider promotes a collaborative relationship between all providers, professional nurses and administrative staff, to ensure continuity of patient care and efficient use of resources. The NP is responsible for the assessment and management of solid tumor medical oncology patients, including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions and development and implementation of appropriate plans of care across the trajectory of illness for patients.<br>
In addition to providing direct and indirect patient care, the hematology oncology APP serves as a role model for professional advanced practice and participates in the professional development of the team through teaching, committee involvement or quality and safety initiatives. The hematology oncology APP will provide thorough, compassionate, culturally sensitive clinical care and should demonstrate operational flexibility and strong leadership, problem-solving and communication skills in order to work effectively with other members of the team.<br>
<ul><li>Performs comprehensive histories and physical examinations.</li><li>Completes high quality and timely documentation.</li><li>Participates in scheduled encounters, maintains capacity for urgent care for the evaluation for complex symptom evaluation and management and improves access for newly diagnosed hematology oncology patients.</li><li>Orders, interprets, and evaluates appropriate laboratory and diagnostic tests.</li><li>Ensues appropriate diagnostic procedures occur in a timely manner through careful coordination with other services such as radiology, facilitating various clinic appointments, communicating with patients regarding test results, and providing coverage for the team</li><li>Performs (oversees/assures completion of) specialized procedures particular to the select medical oncology population mutually agreed upon with collaborating physician.</li><li>Follows and manages patients (in collaboration with MD) enhancing continuity of care across the trajectory of illness.</li><li>Develops appropriate plans of care and follow-up based on the outcomes of diagnostic, laboratory, and physical examination findings across the trajectory of illness</li><li>Facilitates patient movement through the system and efficient use of resources through interdepartmental collaboration.</li><li>Facilitates and co-manages communications between physicians, patients, family, and staff.</li><li>Orders medications and writes prescriptions, inclusive of standard of care antineoplastics and oncologic investigational new drugs according to organizational and regulatory policies and procedures.</li><li>Participates in research efforts to advance knowledge and to promote research-based practice.</li><li>Appreciates the complex medical environments of cancer patients including, but not limited to, those with advanced malignancy or organ dysfunction and the risk for complex drug interactions.</li><li>Maintains and updates clinical knowledge and skills based on current health care practice/research. The Registered Nurse is a professional nurse registered in Massachusetts who is responsible and accountable for planning and providing patient care for assigned patients in accordance with Nursing Standards of Care as set forth in the Nursing Department&rsquo;s Clinical Practice Manual. The registered nurse demonstrates initiative, knowledge and clinical skills in caring for the patient with complex needs.

The Registered Nurse demonstrates the ability to effectively manage patients by assuming full responsibility for the assessment, plan, implementation and evaluation of patient care and is directly responsible to a designated nurse manager, or supervisor.<br>

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES<br>
CLINICAL PRACTICE<br>
A. Organization of Patient Care<br>
1. Accountable for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating a plan of care for a specific patient assignment.<br>
2. Sets priorities when organizing care for patients with varying acuity.<br>
3. Maintain continuity through clear and concise (verbal and written) communication.<br>
4. Demonstrates appropriate knowledge of growth and development of the adult and geriatric patient. In areas, such as the NICU and Obstetrics the principals of growth and development are applicable to the neonate.<br>
B. Quality of Care<br>
1. Documents patient care in a manner that is clear, complete, concise and in compliance with nursing documentation standards.<br>
2. Develops a comprehensive plan of care based on data from an initial assessment of patient and family, information from other members of the health care team, intra-agency referral and previous medical records.<br>
3. Develops a comprehensive educational plan for the patient and family, utilizing appropriate resources and documents according to the department&rsquo;s documentation standards.<br>
4. Develops a comprehensive discharge plan utilizing appropriate resources and referrals including community resources.<br>
5. Evaluates the effectiveness of the plan of care, and documents progress in meeting stated goals. Revises plan of care as needed to achieve desired outcomes.<br>
6. Participates actively in the unit-based and organizational quality management and/or quality improvement programs.<br>
7. Provides a safe environment for patients, staff, family and visitors.<br>
8. Administers medication safely according to established policies and procedures.<br>
9. Performs nursing procedures safely and efficiently.<br>
10. Uses equipment safely and efficiently.<br>
11. Demonstrates awareness of potential/actual risks of infection and modes of transmission.<br>
12. Utilizes universal precautions in nursing practice.<br>
C. Coordination/Collaboration<br>
1. Interacts with patients, families, and colleagues in a professional manner.<br>

3. Develops, utilizes and evaluates unit-specific standards of care.<br>

QUALIFICATIONS:</p><p>
Education:</p><ul><li><p>
Graduate of an approved school of nursing with current registration in Massachusetts.</p></li><li><p>
For newly licensed nurses a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing is required.</p></li></ul><p></p><p>
Experience:</p><ul><li><p>
1. At least 3 years current experience in Oncology nursing required.</p></li><li><p>
2. Current or recent (within 3 years) experience with Central Lines, including accessing skills required.</p></li><li><p>
3. Current or recent (within 3 years) proficient IV skills, including insertion skills preferred.</p></li><li><p>
4. At least 1 year Medical Surgical Experience, Emergency Department, Infusion Center or Critical Care preferred.</p></li><li><p>
5. Infusion experience (medical or oncology) preferred.</p></li><li><p>
6. Ambulatory EPIC experience preferred.</p></li><li><p>
7. OCN certification preferred.</p></li></ul><p><br>
</p><p>SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED</p><p>
The RN must show evidence of the basic analytic thinking necessary to care for a group of patients. Must demonstrate observational skills and the ability to set priorities. Must be able to function under stress with good interpersonal and communication skills. Must demonstrate effective skills in applying hospital standards in area of service, teamwork, communication, respect for others, and time/priority management.</p><p>
WORKING CONDITIONS</p><p>
Works in a variety of patient care environments where there may be exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials such as chemotherapeutic agents, radioisotopes, and radiation. Work entails walking and lifting.</p><p>
Lifting, Pushing and Pulling Policy Statement (effective 3/7/20111): The Department of Nursing has adopted the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)&ndash;recommended maximum weight limit of 35 lbs. for lifting, and a reasonably comparable standard for pushing and pulling, as part of the physical requirements for this position.</p><p>
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY</p><p>
Functionally responsible for the supervision of other RNs, technical and support personnel.</p><p>
