What You Will Do:<br>
We are currently searching for a Scientist. The individual will independently provide support services to satisfy the overall operational objectives of the National Institute on Aging (NIA). The primary objective is to provide services and deliverables through performance of support services. This is a full-time, on-site opportunity in Baltimore, MD.
</p><ul><li><p>Select, devise, plan, and execute experiments in the context of the laboratory&rsquo;s overall research program.</p></li><li><p>
Perform a variety of experimental procedures including isolation and analysis of DNA, RNA, and protein by routine molecular biology methods, such as in situ hybridization, RNA Scope, immunohistochemical staining, automated DNA sequencing, cell culture, Southern, Northern and Western blot analysis, real-time Reverse Transcription-Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR), and protein extraction.</p></li><li><p>
Complete a variety of experimental procedures on the expression of insulin isoforms and genetics of insulin signaling in the brain Alzheimer&rsquo;s Disease (AD) and Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI).</p></li><li><p>
Function as primary investigator in animal research studies and develop animal model systems, as related to neuroscience and optogenetics; submit and gain approval of laboratory animal study protocols.</p></li><li><p>
Determine experimental approaches to be applied to evaluate the hypotheses under investigation and for planning and carrying out those experiments</p></li><li><p>
Evaluate new types of experimental approaches and recommend changes to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) based on knowledge of scientific literature, available facilities, and research needs.</p></li><li><p>
Perform analysis and interpretation of the data for developing strategies for pursuing significant observation and for ensuring accuracy and reproducibility of results.</p></li><li><p>
Evaluate new types of experimental approaches and recommend changes to SOPs based on knowledge of scientific literature, available facilities, and research needs.</p></li><li><p>
Communicate results and methods in reports, presentations, and manuscripts for peer-reviewed publications and at local, national, and international meetings.</p></li><li><p>
Coordinate the training of laboratory personnel, research associates, post-doctoral fellows, visiting scientists, students, and others in specialized technologies.</p></li><li><p>
Independently direct and conduct special research projects that have a high priority for the laboratory with special emphasis on the development of novel research treatments.</p></li><li><p>
Manage scientific equipment and resources (e.g., reagents, stocks of frozen cells, animal samples) including acquisition, documentation, and storage.</p></li><li><p>
Oversee data management for all processed compounds.</p></li><li><p>
Collaborate with staff to confirm assay results.</p></li><li><p>
Evaluate new techniques, instruments, and search literature to propose, design, and test alternative assays for difficult screening targets; confirm assay results; develop secondary assays.</p></li><li><p>
Coordinate projects being developed in the laboratory, propose Stop and Reverse (SAR) strategies and monitor their progress.</p></li><li><p>
Author papers and abstracts detailing research efforts and results for publication in peer-reviewed journals.</p></li><li><p>
Produce research reports and regularly communicate results to staff and collaborators.</p></li><li><p>

What You Will Need:</p><ul><li><p>
Master&rsquo;s degree in biochemical sciences, neuroscience, physiology, cognitive science, and biopsychology or related field.</p></li><li><p>
At least SIX (6) years of biomedical research experience.</p></li><li><p>
Proven ability in managing and coordinating interdisciplinary research projects.</p></li><li><p>
Experience in multiple aspects of manuscript development activities.</p></li><li><p>
Author/ co-author on peer reviewed journals.</p></li><li><p>

Position Summary:</b></p>

<li>Demonstrating an advanced level of laboratory experience, the Clinical Lab Scientist 3 (Medical Technologist or Medical Lab Scientist) reports to Pathology Lab Manager, Supervisor or Lead (or assigned Charge). Performs a variety of both routine and complex clinical laboratory tests and records and reports results following standard operating procedures, policies and regulatory guidelines. These require a professional level of knowledge to properly execute and analyze results, especially where results are abnormal or atypical.</li>
<li>Supports needs of the laboratory including both pre-analytical and analytical areas as assigned.</li>
<li>Provides training of both new hires, current colleagues, students, residents/fellow, and others assigned in the laboratory. Sets up and maintains equipment; monitors quality control standards.</li>
<li>Assigned tasks in bringing online new testing and programs, validation, QA, and research support.

They will interface with various employers and staff to monitor data collection and work with the data team to transform data and import it into our primary system where it can be used to support daily operations and reporting.</p>

<li>Import files into our database software, Union Ware, and assist with matching batch payments to finance batches.</li>

<li>Assist with importing monthly political action committee contribution files into Union Ware.</li>
<li>Assist with PAC contributions that are being sent directly to the International Union (IU) and those that pass through the Council to ensure members receive credit for their contributions.</li>

The University of Maryland organ transplant center is one of the largest in the United States, performing more than 400 transplants per year, including 300 kidneys, 80 livers, 20 pancreas, and 45 thoracic transplants. The clinical center receives more than 1,500 new patient referrals each year and follows more than 4,800 patients who have been transplanted over the last two decades, as well as more than 1,400 patients on the organ transplant waiting lists.<br>
Our leaders hold national and international prominence in their fields and have translated their discoveries into clinical management guidelines. We are one of only two transplant centers serving more than 5 million people in Maryland.</p><p>
The position is responsible for assisting with coordinating the day-to-day operations of one or more research studies or clinical trial protocols.
