LOCAL LAW STUDENT PAID INTERNSHIPS
Paid Interns are assigned to work directly with experienced trial attorneys and assist the attorneys with a wide range of duties, including (1) victim and witness interviews; (2) assistance with formal plea procedures; (3) trial preparation; (4) research and writing; and (5) assistance with jury selection and jury trials. Interns routinely accompany prosecutors to court to observe and help with court dockets, hearings, and trials. Interns may also be required to complete additional assignments, specific projects, or observations as prescribed by their school or professors.
WHEN APPLYING:
Your resume will be forwarded to Division and Bureau Chiefs with paid internship openings. The Chiefs will reach out to you if they are interested in interviewing you for a paid internship position. Every applicant is subject to a full background investigation which takes about 2 weeks and there is a final review before you are offered a position. When hired, you will spend your first full day with HCDAO in orientation with our HR Division located at 1201 Franklin, 6th Floor, Houston, Texas, 77002, You will then be released to your assigned division at the Criminal Justice Center (CJC) to begin working.
You will create your schedule with your supervising attorney on your first day. Interns are evaluated at the end of a 4-6 month term to determine if they are best suited to continue in the internship. You must be willing to work at least a semester or two with HCDAO. The position pays $20.00 per hour for up to 25 hours per week. We ask that you commit to at least 20 hours per week.</div>

Pre-commit Program
Every year, HCDAO accepts applications for our Pre-commit program. HCDAO Pre-commits are treated as Misdemeanor 3 attorneys while they await their bar results. They will conduct victim and witness interviews; (2) conduct formal plea procedures; (3) do trial preparation; (4) research and writing; and (5) conduct jury selection and jury trials. Post Bar fellows routinely go to court to conduct court dockets, hearings, and trials. Pre-commits may also be required to complete additional assignments, specific projects, or observations as prescribed by their Chief.
Pre-commit / M#3 Duties
Typically first assigned to the Misdemeanor Trial Bureau, where cases of all types are handled from preliminary hearings to jury trials. The progression from the Misdemeanor Trial Bureau into other units is based on the needs of the office and demonstrated ability and work ethic. After an initial period in the Misdemeanor Division, Assistant District Attorneys move on to the Felony Trial Bureau where they handle a range of felony cases, including serious crimes such as aggravated robbery and murder. Assistant District Attorneys may also have the opportunity to work in specialty divisions such as Crimes Against Children, Financial Crimes, Trafficking, and Mental Health.
Job Description:
<div><ul><li>Assistant District Attorney represents the State of Texas in criminal proceedings in the Harris County Criminal District Courts and County Criminal Courts at Law. The Assistant District Attorney duties include the following:</li></ul>
</div><ul><li>Prepare case files, evidence, documents for court proceedings</li>
<li>Interview victims and witnesses.</li>
<li>Analyze assigned cases and prepare the cases for trial.</li>
<li>Interact with victims, police, and witnesses to make critical decisions to support court proceedings.</li>
<li>Conduct legal research and prepare motions.</li>
<li>Present cases, cross examine witnesses, and make arguments in the court.</li>
<li>Perform administrative tasks in connection with other assigned duties.</li>

Qualifications
Applicants must be recent law school graduates prepping for the February 2026 or July 2026 Texas State Bar Exam. Qualified candidates should also have an excellent academic record. Pre-commits typically come to the program after completion of their Texas State Bar Exam however, there are some exceptions based on HCDAO&rsquo;s current needs.
The program has about a 3-6 month term that could lead directly to employment with HCDAO if the fellow does well during their fellowship and passes the Texas State Bar exam. Our Pre-commits will be paid a salary of $28.00 per hour. If a pre-commit is offered an ADA position upon passing their Texas State Bar, he/she will then be granted our starting Misdemeanor 3 ADA pay and full benefits. HCDAO offers a host of very attractive benefits, and as a public employee, the new ADA qualifies for the Public Student Loan Forgiveness Program as well!
Note:
Applicants that are chosen for our pre-commit program will be sworn in and transferred into a Misdemeanor #3 ADA position and will begin receiving entry level ADA pay ($93,100.80) upon receiving passing bar exam results. If a chosen applicant does not pass their Texas State Bar Exam, the applicant must be present on the day of exam results release. The applicant must resign from their pre-commit position, return all assigned equipment, and badges to HCDAO HR Operations.

<div><ul><li>Guide the learning of students in accordance with the district&rsquo;s philosophy of education toward the achievement of curriculum goals and the student&rsquo;s IEP
</li></ul><ul><li>Collaborate with students, parents, and other members of staff to develop IEP through ARD Committee process for each student assigned and through alignment to the curriculum.
</li></ul><ul><li>Implement an instructional, therapeutic, or skill development program for assigned students and show written evidence of preparation as required.
</li></ul><ul><li>Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of assigned students.
</li></ul><ul><li>Offer accelerated instruction to each student who meets any of the state &ldquo;at risk&rdquo; criteria in order for the student to perform satisfactorily on the state assessment.
