Description
The Bagley Research Fellowship honors the memory of Dr. Charles Bagley Jr., the founder of the neurosurgery service at the University of Maryland. Having trained with Dr. Harvey Cushing, Dr. Bagley promoted research and scholarship for the improvement of neurosurgical patient care. In this spirit, the Bagley Fellow will engage in clinical research in the Department of Neurosurgery with the goal of producing scholarly work to advance the field of neurosurgery and ultimately improve patient care.
The 2026-2027 Bagley Fellowship focuses on spinal neurotrauma clinical research in the Spinal Neurotrauma Research Program embedded within the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. The program works with the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center (STC), one of the nation&rsquo;s highest-volume trauma centers, which surgically manages approximately 100-120 cervical spinal cord injury (SCI) cases annually. The program&rsquo;s research portfolio spans intraoperative imaging, surgical decompression strategies, registry-based outcomes science, and registry-embedded clinical trials focused on improving care for patients with traumatic cervical SCI.
The primary research infrastructure of the program is the Shock Trauma Cervical SCI Registry (STC-SCI): a prospective, consecutively enrolled REDCap-based platform linking injury mechanism and timing, operative detail, standardized MRI and CT imaging phenotypes, quantitative intraoperative ultrasound, postoperative decompression verification, complications, and longitudinal neurologic, functional, and patient-reported outcomes. The registry serves simultaneously as a prospective observational data resource and as the trial-enabling infrastructure for an ongoing registry-embedded randomized pilot clinical trials. The Research Fellow will serve as an embedded, full-time member of this program.
Primary responsibilities center on clinical research data management and registry operations, with dedicated time for collaborative scholarly activity. The position is designed for candidates with substantive interest in academic spine surgery, neurotrauma, neurosurgery, and clinical research who seek rigorous immersion in clinical trial infrastructure, outcomes methodology, and prospective registry-based investigation.
Primary Responsibilities
Day-to-day activities will include but are not limited to:<ul><li> Day-to-day curation and management of the STC-SCI REDCap registry, including prospective data entry, retrospective data entry, ensure data integrity and data verification, completeness monitoring, and discrepancy resolution</li><li> Collaboration with clinical research coordinators to ensure accurate and timely capture of acute care, operative, imaging, and longitudinal outcomes data across the care continuum</li><li> Coordination of clinical follow-up workflows, including scheduling, telehealth contacts, telephone assessments, and standardized outcome instrument administration (SCIM-III, AO Spine PROST)</li><li> Quality control of imaging variables (MRI, CT, intraoperative ultrasound) using prespecified measurement rules; flagging and resolving discrepancies in collaboration with the faculty principal investigator</li><li> Enrollment screening and consent coordination support for the registry-embedded clinical trials</li><li> Support for IRB protocol maintenance, amendments, and annual continuing reviews in coordination with clinical research coordinators</li><li> Contribution to manuscript preparation, abstract submission, and grant progress reporting</li><li> Participation in program research meetings, case conferences, and journal club activities</li><li> Regular, structured reporting to the faculty principal investigator</li></ul>
The Fellow will also have the opportunity to initiate and lead mentor-approved independent scholarly projects using registry data and other projects, including outcomes analyses, imaging biomarker studies, and methodology manuscripts aligned with the program&rsquo;s research agenda. Mentored project completion, abstract submission, and manuscript preparation are expected outcomes of the fellowship year.
Clinical Exposure
Outside of research duties, the Fellow will observe clinical activities within the Department of Neurosurgery and at Shock Trauma Center, including cervical spine and neurosurgery operative cases, didactic conferences, and patient rounds. The Fellow will not perform clinical duties independently.

Documentation and Reporting

Quality Assessment/Quality Improvement 
Primary Responsibilities: 
<ul><li>Ensure that the sonography examination results meet the facility standard for Quality Assurance before findings are released for interpretation.</li><li>Provide oversight for the assessment of sonography examinations performed within the vascular lab for technical and image quality, and accuracy.</li><li>Work with the Medical Director to ensure quality patient care.</li><li>Function as the clinical, technical leader/expert in sonography imaging within the vascular lab.</li><li>Accountable for the creation, oversight, and implementation of scanning protocols and quality control activities.</li><li>Provide technical, image quality, and accuracy oversight for the assessment of sonography examinations.</li><li>Ensure that appropriate accreditation is secured and maintained.</li><li>Carryout quality assurance protocols and quality improvement measures.</li></ul>

Functions as a member of the patient-centered care team to provide direct patient care activities under the supervision of a Registered Nurse for assigned patients and their families/significant others. Primary Duties and Responsibilities 
<ul><li>
Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies procedures quality and safety standards and SPIRIT Values. Complies with governmental regulations and accreditation standards.</li><li>
Assists patients with activities of daily living (ADLs) and personal hygiene including bathing mouth care dressing skin care positioning feeding ambulation toileting and range of motion activities. Assists with patient mobilization and rehabilitation use of crutches and walkers and transfer/transport of patients in wheelchairs and stretchers.</li><li>
Collects specimens (e.g. blood urine sputum stool); performs venipuncture/phlebotomy; obtains EKGs; applies external telemetry monitoring boxes/devices; and inserts intravenous (IV) catheters changes of IV sites and dressings and routine inspection of IV sites.</li><li>
Assists in the measurement and documentation of patient's intake and output (I&amp;O). Accurately takes and records patient's vital signs height and weight pulse oximetry point of care and waived testing (i.e. finger sticks for glucose monitoring/Accucheck urine dipstick hemoccult) and other pertinent data or information in the patient's health record.</li><li>
Performs routine sterile non-sterile (e.g. application of thermal soaks) and other treatments/activities identified by Unit/Hospital policy inclusive of but not limited to: tube feedings; ostomy care; Foley Catheter care and removal; perineal care; simple dressing changes and wound care; turning and positioning; postmortem care and transportation of body to the morgue; maintenance of drainage tubes with/without pump or suction; care of oxygen equipment; and assistance with the application maintenance and removal of traction casts splints and exercise equipment.</li><li>
Maintains the comfort privacy and confidentiality and dignity of each patient in the delivery of services. Performs patient observation duty including 1:1 observation and application of restraints. Prepares patients to be seen by providers. Assists providers and registered nurses in patient examinations and procedures.</li><li>
Rounds on all assigned patients based on established standards (e.g. purposeful hourly rounding). Reports actual and potential problems concerning patients/families including changes in the patient's condition to the registered nurse and other care team members as necessary. Ensures complete hand off to oncoming shift and obtains full hand off from outgoing shift. Initiates and assists in CPR when indicated.</li><li>
Participates in patient/family teaching as directed and responds to questions from patients families and visitors in a prompt courteous and respectful manner referring them to appropriate personnel if necessary.</li><li>

Minimal Qualifications 
Education<ul><li>

Completion of an approved Patient Care Technician training program required

Less than 1 year experience as a certified nursing assistant or a patient care tech required and</li><li>
Experience as a care technician; general health care experience in an acute care long-term care or other settings; student nurse in junior or senior year preferred
