 We are looking for a research assistant excited about translational research to join the Daniel Anderson/Robert Langer lab at the Koch Institute of Integrative Cancer Research, MIT to support research projects on developing medical devices for treating diabetes. This is a highly interdisciplinary project at the intersection of device engineering, materials science, and bioengineering; and involves multiple collaborations. The role will involve microfabrication, device assembly, in vitro prototyping, and preclinical evaluation in rodent and swine models. In addition, the person will be expected to maintain accurate laboratory records, and stock laboratory supplies. This is a great opportunity for engineers interested in gaining research experience in an interdisciplinary area combining engineering with translational research before applying for graduate/medical school.  The Walter Laboratory (https://walter.hms.harvard.edu/) at Harvard Medical School and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Boston is seeking a highly motivated Research Assistant to study genome maintenance and how defects in this process cause cancer and other human diseases. The laboratory uses a powerful biochemical system derived from frog eggs as a model to study mechanisms of DNA replication and DNA repair. We use molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, and single-molecule imaging approaches. The Walter lab is a welcoming community where all members actively work together to understand how cells maintain their genomes in health and disease.

Our laboratory investigates the neurobiology of sleep; in particular, we hope to identify the neurotransmitters and neural pathways that underlie narcolepsy and other sleep disorders. If you have ever wondered why many women in menopause develop poor sleep, cognitive flexibility issues, and hot flashes, you may be interested in this research group. We have a 2+ year research position available. My name is Carrie Mahoney, I am an instructor in the Department of Neurology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC). My project is investigating the role of the wake-promoting neurons of the lateral hypothalamus, the orexin neurons, in symptoms of menopause.

The job will require handling mice, rodent surgery, conducting behavioral tests (i.e. EPM, OF with Noldus-EthoVision) recording sleep and body temperature, and analysis of FLIR-video files. Other skills required include knowledge of histology, including sectioning and immunostaining mouse brains. The Research Assistant will learn and use a variety of molecular and behavioral methods including: immunohistochemistry, PCR, rodent surgery, physiologic recordings of sleep, and fiber photometry. The applicant should have good organizational skills as they will also assist in basic laboratory management such as mouse colony maintenance and ordering supplies. The knowledge gained through our work is providing new insights into disease mechanisms and innovative treatment strategies for our patients, including novel small molecules, RNA therapeutics, and genome-editing approaches. Summary</b><p>
The successful candidate will join the Translational Neuroimmune Psychiatry Program, a new research enterprise in the department of psychiatry led by Dr Baum, its inaugural director. The lab seeks to discover novel, clinically useful biomarkers through interrogation of immune molecules using high-throughput biochemical and histochemical techniques. For example, the lab is using novel methods to discover new auto-antibody syndromes that present with psychiatric symptoms that phenocopy idiopathic bipolar disorder and psychotic disorders. The lab is also interested in uncovering why some people with autoimmune disorders like lupus or infectious encephalitis have psychiatric symptoms and some do not, and why some people develop rare immune-mediated adverse events to useful medications in psychiatry. Under the direction of the PI, the research assistant provides assistance with work related to laboratory research (including both experimental and analysis). Most of this work is &ldquo;dry lab&rdquo; including analysis of medium-sized datasets using R, Python, or similar environments, as well as IRB, lab management, and organizational or administrative tasks. However, tasks may also include some &ldquo;wet lab&rdquo; activities like aliquoting and shipping samples for antibody sequencing, etc. As the research program is in its earliest start-up stages, candidates must be motivated, independent, flexible and with good problem-solving abilities to be able to tackle novel, unanticipated tasks necessary to complete the scientific goals. Should there be interest, there may also be opportunities for more translational research as well, or for qualitative or philosophical work in related Neuroethics topics.
