 The Ginty Laboratory in the Department of Neurobiology at Harvard Medical School is looking for a highly motivated Research Assistant to assist in the study of the sensory responses in the parabrachial nucleus. This project utilizes mouse genetics, molecular biology, histological and behavioral approaches and electrophysiology to understand neurobiological mechanisms of touch and pain. The Research Assistant will perform a variety of basic and general laboratory research and clerical tasks under specific direction, and may be asked to perform familiar tasks independently.

 The Walter Laboratory (https://walter.hms.harvard.edu/) at Harvard Medical School and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Boston is seeking a highly motivated Research Assistant to study genome maintenance and how defects in this process cause cancer and other human diseases. The laboratory uses a powerful biochemical system derived from frog eggs as a model to study mechanisms of DNA replication and DNA repair. We use molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, and single-molecule imaging approaches. The Walter lab is a welcoming community where all members actively work together to understand how cells maintain their genomes in health and disease.

 Under supervision from a post-doctoral fellow or graduate student, the Research Assistant will pursue a project involving a wide range of techniques, including setting up in-vitro biochemical reactions using frog egg extracts, electrophoresis, microscopy, Western blotting, and molecular cloning. In conducting their research, technicians will design, carry out, interpret, record, and present experiments.

 Our technicians are encouraged to take intellectual ownership of their projects. We are looking for a Research Assistant to participate in various projects in the laboratory. Working under direct supervision of the principal investigator, the candidate will be responsible for: 1) handling live mice to set up crosses, wean litters, collect tissue biopsies for genotyping, and inject various drugs, 2) extracting, dissecting, processing and sectioning cochlear and brain tissues from euthanized mice, 3) detecting mRNA and proteins of interest by in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry, 4) preparing buffers and reagents for molecular biology, 5) performing gel electrophoresis, 6) acquiring images using epifluorescence and confocal microscopy, 7) assisting in general laboratory maintenance, including setting up of equipment, and organizing reagents and supplies. In addition, opportunities will be available to conduct gene expression analysis using R or Python in collaborative projects. The lab seeks to discover novel, clinically useful biomarkers through interrogation of immune molecules using high-throughput biochemical and histochemical techniques. For example, the lab is using novel methods to discover new auto-antibody syndromes that present with psychiatric symptoms that phenocopy idiopathic bipolar disorder and psychotic disorders. The lab is also interested in uncovering why some people with autoimmune disorders like lupus or infectious encephalitis have psychiatric symptoms and some do not, and why some people develop rare immune-mediated adverse events to useful medications in psychiatry. Under the direction of the PI, the research assistant provides assistance with work related to laboratory research (including both experimental and analysis). Most of this work is &ldquo;dry lab&rdquo; including analysis of medium-sized datasets using R, Python, or similar environments, as well as IRB, lab management, and organizational or administrative tasks. However, tasks may also include some &ldquo;wet lab&rdquo; activities like aliquoting and shipping samples for antibody sequencing, etc. As the research program is in its earliest start-up stages, candidates must be motivated, independent, flexible and with good problem-solving abilities to be able to tackle novel, unanticipated tasks necessary to complete the scientific goals. Should there be interest, there may also be opportunities for more translational research as well, or for qualitative or philosophical work in related Neuroethics topics. We study these diseases by &ldquo;turning back the clock&rdquo; &ndash; using new technology in stem cell biology to take cells from our patients and return them to an embryonic-like state, wherein they regain the ability to form any type of cell in the body. The Department of Neuroscience is a basic science department that focuses on cutting-edge research in the areas of synapse development and function, sensory systems, and complex behavior, cognitive neuroscience, and behavioral neurobiology. The Dr. Emily Newman lab is supported by funding from the federal government as well as university funds. The faculty within the department is also extensively involved with the Graduate School of Biomedical Science Program in Neuroscience as well as teaching within the medical school.</p>
What You'll Do:

In collaboration with Dr. Newman, the candidate will learn to perform fundamental and advanced experimental behavioral neuroscience techniques. The ideal candidate is seeking postbaccalaureate training in systems and behavioral neuroscience approaches prior to applying for graduate programs in related areas of biomedical research. The candidate will conduct social behavioral experiments in mice, maintain a small transgenic rodent colony, order basic laboratory supplies, and track inventory.
