OCC attorneys provide advice to the Director and USCIS Operations on the legal consequences of laws, policies and initiatives that affect immigration benefit processing and adjudications (including visas, inadmissibility, parole, adjustment of status, abandonment, deportability, citizenship, naturalization, and national security issues). Our attorneys also review regulations, policy memoranda, and field guidance for legal sufficiency, and often provide litigation support to the Department of Justice in federal lawsuits involving USCIS regulations, adjudications, practices, and/or policies. <b>Strong preference for applicants with immigration enforcement experience and/or prior positions providing legal advice to law enforcement agencies.</b></p></div>

<b>You qualify at the GS-14 level if you: </b>are currently an attorney in federal employment with the equivalent of being a GS-13 and at least one year experience at that level, or if not a federal employee and you have at least two years of post-J.D. professional legal experience commensurate with the duties and responsibilities of the position.<br>

Applicants must possess a J.D. or LL.M. degree from an ABA-accredited law school or serve a legal apprenticeship in California, Virginia, Vermont, or Washington and pass the bar exam in order to be permitted to practice law in one (1) of those jurisdictions.<br>

<b>Bar Requirement GS-13 thru GS-15:</b> Be an active member of the bar (any jurisdiction).<br>

Basic Function
<br>Provides all necessary administrative support to the Attorneys and the Office of the General Counsel. Performs duties in a safe, efficient manner and in compliance with all applicable rules and safety procedures. Responsibilities and Specific Duties
<br><br>
Maintains strict confidentiality of all legal matters handled by the department.
<br><br>
May log incoming lawsuits, charging instruments and other legal requests; maintains a tracking system for case intake, closings, and monthly statistics of same.
<br><br>
Composes and types legal documents, correspondence, memos, letters, forms, reports, etc.
<br><br>
Opens, screens, processes, and distributes mail, answers, screens, and directs telephone calls, orders materials and supplies, and other general administrative duties which may include electronic filings made with or received from court clerk’s office.
<br><br>
Maintains attorney calendars noting deadlines in Docket Control Orders, depositions dates, court hearings and trial dates.
<br><br>
Communicates with courthouse staff, outside counsel and other administrative bodies when necessary. Coordinates appointments, meetings, and calendars for the attorneys.
<br><br>
Organizes and maintains electronic case files in the designated METRO network drive and legal case management system.
<br><br>
Performs electronic filing of legal documents with the courts and/or administrative agencies.
<br><br>
Reviews billings/invoices and processes them for payment or reimbursement.
<br><br>
May act as the designated records coordinator on the Legal Department File Plan.
<br><br>
Maintains record retention schedule and monitors compliance. Arranges for timely destruction of documents and logs according to METRO’s Retention Program.
<br><br>
Participates in projects as assigned with other Departmental staff, including assisting Paralegals with preparation of trial notebooks and other documents needed for trial.
<br><br>
Communicates with individuals and entities outside the Office of General Counsel (both within and outside of METRO) regarding legal and administrative matters.
<br><br>
Provides excellent customer service to METRO internal and external customers.
<br><br>
Applies SMS (Safety Management System) methods and principles in daily routine and supports all aspects of the agency’s Public Transportation Agency Safety Plan (PTASP).
<br><br>
Promotes safety awareness and follows safety procedures to reduce or eliminate accidents.
<br><br>
Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
<br><br>
<b>Pay Range:</b> $30.38/hour - $39.81/hour Education Requirement
<br>High school diploma or GED required.
<br>Years & Experience Required
<br>Minimum seven (7) general secretarial experience to include four (4) years working with litigation cases. Experience in a legal environment or with personal injury is a plus. Knowledge & Skills Required
<br>Strong proficiency with Personal Computers and Microsoft Office specifically Excel, Word, and calendaring in Microsoft Outlook. Knowledge of legal terminology and general office procedures. Excellent communication (written and verbal) skills. Accurate typing skills, typing of 60-65 wpm preferred. Writing sample will be requested (brief professional letter or memo, with sensitive or privileged information redacted, if necessary). Additional Information
