The Lab Operations Manager is responsible for the general operation of the laboratory. Directs and coordinates through subordinate supervisory personnel, all technical activities and functions within one of the major laboratory areas. 


The Lab Operations Manager is accountable and responsible for all administrative and technical functions in assigned area including report preparation, assisting in the budget process and representing assigned area at departmental meetings. In each specialized area, s/he maintains in-depth knowledge of techniques, principles and instrumentation. 
Responsibilities<ul><li>
Responsible for lab operations, support and back up lab technical director in the oversight of all aspects of efficient lab operations.</li><li>
Evaluates, develops and implements new technical procedures for assigned laboratory to ensure accurate and efficient delivery of services.</li><li>
Develops and implements policies and procedures as necessary to maintain high level of functioning in assigned area.</li><li>
Maintains established technical and operational standards to ensure compliance with hospital standards and licensing and accrediting agencies.</li><li>
Manages staff of first line supervisors, technologists and coordinator and may assume responsibility for the absence of appropriate supervisory staff.</li><li>
Responsible for scheduling supervisors.</li><li>
Communicates with storage facility vendors regarding storage of slides; supervises slide room supervisor and respective staff/transcription staff.</li><li>
May be required to ensure effective, efficient and safe personnel coverage for 24-hour basis, by preparing an advance time schedule for all technical and clerical personnel.</li><li>
May be responsible for managing computer systems, including programming, workload capture, billing capture, interface conversion codes, and software validation.</li><li>
Responsible for all departmental statistics, and coordinates collection and preparation as required.</li><li>

Responsible for the oversight of anatomic / surgical pathology lab operation, anatomic laboratory QA, and all accrediting agency inspections including those for New York State, CLIA, CAP, etc.</li><li>
Serves as the departments liaison with labor relations to help Lab Technical Director prepare warning notices, employee evaluations, disciplinary actions and terminations.</li><li>
Provides effective recommendations on hiring, advancement, departmental orientation and training of personnel.</li><li>
Reviews and approves departmental payroll activities.</li><li>
Develops and presents programs for continuing education.</li><li>
Performs various laboratory procedures as needed.</li><li>

We currently operate a cryoEM sample preparation laboratory, tissue culture room, proteomics laboratory, and several EM suites with 9 Titan Krios, 4 Glacios, 2 side-entry TEMs, and 3 cryo-FIB/SEM instruments.List of Responsibilities:<ul><li>Perform regular maintenance on laboratory facilities and monitor instrumentation.</li><li>Maintain the sample preparation laboratory and small scientific equipment.</li><li>Manage supply inventory and maintain cleanliness in the laboratory.</li><li>Have good record keeping, organizational and time management skills.</li><li>Clear communication skills to internal and external users of the facility.</li><li>Be proactive in problem solving day to day laboratory operations.</li><li>Support researchers using the sample preparation laboratory and scientific equipment.</li><li>Assist with training and answering questions on laboratory SOPs.</li><li>The expectation is that this individual will have the capacity to grow in the position and take on routine laboratory staff duties.</li></ul>Required Qualifications and Experience:<ul><li>A science degree (Associate degree or above),</li><li>Awareness of structural biology and related fields,</li><li>Biochemical research wet lab experience,</li><li>Comfortable around scientific instrumentation, and</li><li>Basic computer skills (comfortable with Linux environment and web interfaces).</li></ul>Preferred Qualifications and Experience:<ul><li>Laboratory experience with biological macromolecules (protein, RNA, DNA) at some level,</li><li>Able to communicate with customers for cross-training and answering questions about SOPs, and</li><li>Exposure to high-end instrumentation and capital scientific equipment.</li></ul>EEO Statement:NYSBC is an equal opportunity employer.
