We are excited to announce the 2026 U.S. Senate Sergeant at Arms (SAA) Summer Internship Program, a ten-week paid opportunity for college and technical/trade school students to gain firsthand experience with the operations of the United States Senate and careers that support the Legislative Branch.</p><p>
The SAA is a nonpartisan office that plays a vital role in ensuring the Senate can meet its constitutional duties, including providing security, technology and essential support services for Senators and Senate offices.</p><p>
The SAA Summer Internship Program blends meaningful, hands-on work with structured educational programming. Selected interns will:</p><ul><li>
Gain rare insight into Senate operations.</li><li>
Contribute to projects that substantively support the Senate community.</li><li>
Develop professional skills in a historic and fast-paced institution.</li><li>
Gain practical experience with professional systems and equipment.</li></ul><p>
Selected interns will work in Washington, D.C. for ten weeks between Monday, May 29, and Friday, August 28.</p><p></p><p><b>
About the Senate Sergeant at Arms:</b></p><p><br>
The Sergeant at Arms and Doorkeeper serves as the United States Senate&rsquo;s chief law enforcement and protocol officer as well as the executive officer responsible for a host of support services at the Senate. The office of the SAA is responsible for all Senate computers, software, equipment and technology support; oversees broadcasting of Senate floor proceedings and committee hearings; provides audio video recording and photographic services; and offers printing and graphics and telecommunications services. The SAA also assists all Senate offices with their mailing, staffing, purchasing, and financial needs.
</p><p><b>Program Objectives:</b></p><br>
<ul><li>
Provide SAA offices with additional assistance during the busy summer months.</li><li>
Introduce college and technical/trade school students to the SAA and the U.S. Senate through work assignments and educational programs.</li><li>
Provide a potential pipeline of qualified candidates for future employment within SAA offices, should an intern meet the criteria and qualifications for such employment after they graduate.</li></ul><p><b>
Eligible students must:</b></p><ul><li>
have completed at least one year of college OR technical/trade school and be enrolled for the coming fall semester.</li><li>
be available to start the internship between May 29 and June 26.</li><li>
be able to work ten full-time (40-hour) work weeks at the U.S. Senate in Washington, D.C. Note: some internship positions may allow for partial remote work, but fully remote work is not available under the SAA Summer Internship Program.</li><li>

Individuals who have already participated in the SAA Summer Internship Program are not eligible to participate in the program again, except with the specific written approval of SAA Human Resources.  <b>Key Accountabilities/Essential Job Duties:</b></p><p><b>
 </b>Greets customers and answers informational inquiries and questions; provides information regarding activities and location of departments, offices and employees within the organization. Answers, screens and forwards telephone calls; records and relays messages as necessary. Learns and becomes proficient on internal software systems. Operates various computerized record keeping and document processing systems to input and retrieve data in support of departmental and Senate operations. Prepares and processes various correspondence, forms, records, reports, requests, requisitions and other documents according to office practices. Accepts designated, department-focus projects to research, and proposes ideas and solutions. Prepares orders for routine office supplies; requests special orders as needed; maintains inventory and distributes supplies. Collaborates with team members to coordinate and drive projects forward.</p><p><b>

To be employed by a Senate employing office in a paid position in the continental United States an individual must:<br>
1. Be a U.S. citizen;<br>

<p>
The Reshaping Prosecution Program is dedicated to transforming what it means to be a prosecutor by focusing on the dignity of all people impacted by the criminal justice system. Prosecutors play a critical, but often hidden, role in mass incarceration as one of the most powerful actors in the criminal justice system. They decide who to charge with a crime, what crime to charge, whether to detain someone in jail pending trial, and what sentence to recommend if there is a conviction. Yet, despite this immense power, prosecutors have largely not been the focus of criminal justice reform efforts until recently. Our team helps prosecutors across the country work to end mass incarceration, pursue racial equity, and be more transparent with the communities they serve. This position will focus on Reshaping Prosecution's projects including technical assistance to District Attorney offices and community-based organizations across the country.</p>
<p>
The Reshaping Prosecution intern will learn how to:</p>
<ul>
<li>conduct community and policy landscape research</li>
<li>develop community outreach strategies</li>
<li>manage advocacy efforts</li>
<li>draft written content for a wide audience</li>
</ul><h3 class="jobSectionHeader"><b>About the role:</b></h3>
<p>
1. Expand and support our network of stakeholders and partners in their racial equity-focused reforms.</p>
<ul>
<li>Create resources and tools for current and previous partners to stay in contact and share updates.</li>
<li>Creating a database to contain information in an easily digestible way.</li>
</ul>
<p>2. Provide programmatic and administrative support to the Reshaping Prosecution Initiative.</p>
<ul>
<li>Help to liaise with site and community partners and project funders.</li>
<li>Support logistics for external meetings.</li>
</ul>
<p>3. Provide guidance and thought partnership related to advocacy and community outreach.</p>
<ul>
<li>Researching websites for contact information</li>
<li>Research websites for platforms and policies of various government officials, criminal justice organizations, grassroots organizations.</li>
</ul>
<p>4. Draft written content for newsletters, guides, memos, talking points, etc., about prosecutors' role in addressing racial disparities.</p>
<ul>
<li>Contribute research and content for site-based memos and reports, public-facing publications, and blog posts.</li>
<li>Support project proposal drafting and submission processes.</li>
</ul>
<p>5. Keep the team up to date on the latest news, literature, trends and elections impacting prosecution reform by conducting research.</p>
<ul>
<li>Researching periodicals, social media, etc. for advocacy-related materials.</li>
<li>Conducting desk and qualitative research to learn more about prosecutor offices across the country.</li>
</ul>
<p>6. Conduct landscape analysis regarding community-based organizations, District Attorney offices, organizations that provide restorative justice and diversion programs, etc.</p>
<ul>
<li>Creating power analysis maps.</li>
<li>Identifying key issues stakeholders advocate and work on within specific counties/states.</li>
</ul><h3 class="jobSectionHeader"><b>What qualifications are we looking for?</b></h3>
<p><b>
Required:</b></p>
<ul>
<li>Interest in the criminal legal system;</li>
<li>Demonstrated ability to work with advocates, government officials, criminal legal system personnel, practitioners, and people who are directly impacted by the criminal legal system.</li>
</ul>
<p><b>Preferred:</b></p>
<ul>
<li>Education in public policy, social work, political science, criminal justice, or related field; or equivalent work experience.</li>
<li>Lived experience as a person directly impacted by the criminal legal system.</li>
<li>Strong interest in racial justice advocacy.</li>
</ul><h3 class="jobSectionHeader"><b>Knowledge, Skills, &amp; Abilities you'll bring:</b></h3>
<ul><li>Strong organizational skills.</li>
<li>Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.</li>
<li>Proficient with Canva.</li>
</ul><h3 class="jobSectionHeader"><b>Location:</b></h3>
<p>
Please note this role will report to our<b> Washington, D.C. or Brooklyn, NY </b>office. Vera employees adhere to a hybrid schedule and are in-office on an alternating schedule that generally amounts to 10 days per month.</p>

Compensation and Benefits:</b></h3>
<p>
The compensation range for this position is <b>$17.00-25.00</b>. Actual compensation will vary depending on factors including but not limited to experience and performance. Applicants may choose to receive academic credit. For those who need to earn academic Credit, Vera will gladly assist in working with the school or program to make arrangements and meet requirements.</p>
