</div><p><b>Purpose of Position</b>:</p><p>
This position is an integral part of the health care setting service and the incumbent receives assignments from the appropriate employee in charge of patient and messenger escort, in accordance with the operational procedures determined by health care setting leadership. Transports patients to and from the Nursing Service and all other patient areas for specialized treatment and examinations as a primary function, but will also perform such other duties as required.</p><p><b>
Examples of Typical Tasks</b>:</p><p>
1. Obtains patient escort assignments and schedules from a designated Dispatcher/Supervisor, Service Department and reports to Nurse-in-Charge.</p><p>
2. Introduces self to patient, explains the nature of the trip, and escorts the patient to and from the Nursing Service to a designated area until someone else assumes responsibility for the patient or given another assignment by the Nursing Supervisor and reports back to the Dispatcher/Supervisor, Service Department.</p><p>
3. Transports patients by wheelchair, stretcher, bed or stretcher-bed, and escorts ambulatory patients, including those with intravenous apparatus to and from various nursing units, x-ray, scheduled therapies, various clinics, other diagnostic and therapeutic units, transfers, discharges, religious and recreation centers within the healthcare setting, accompany children to school within.</p><p>
4. Maintains control of patients&rsquo; charts and releases same only to authorized personnel.</p><p>
5. Maintains records of patient transport activities including the time a patient is picked-up, time of patient&rsquo;s arrival at a specified area and time of patient&rsquo;s return to the Nursing Service.</p><p>
6. Places patients in and out of wheelchair, stretcher, bed, and morgue tray and obtains assistance, if necessary. Positions patents on tables in such areas as x-ray, P.T., etc. and uses Hoyer lifters and other patient lifting devices.</p><p>
7. Escorts newly-admitted patients to designated areas in the health care setting complex and assists them in storing their luggage, packages, clothing and other items.</p><p>
8. Transports bodies and/or assists Mortuary Caretaker in transporting same to the mortuary and places in refrigerator and, when necessary, searches D.O.A.&rsquo;s, completes the required D.O.A.&rsquo;s reports, transports fetus, amputated parts or other specimen to morgue; delivers specimens, charts, x-rays, etc. to and from specified area (such as O.R., wards, laboratories, etc.).</p><p>
9. Responsible for the ready availability, upkeep and cleanliness of wheelchairs, stretchers, stretcher beds and morgue trays, sterilization of incoming patients&rsquo; clothing and other items, when required.</p><p>
10. Performs such other duties as are necessary, when assigned (e.g., collect and deliver regular and emergency requisitions for x-ray, electrocardiograph, basal metabolism, physiotherapy and other diagnostic tests and treatments, assists with transporting various equipment and supplies and other messenger assignment).</p>

</div><p><b>Purpose of Position</b>:</p><p>
Under direct supervision of a Licensed Nurse or other licensed professional staff, performs activities and procedures of a non-professional nature in direct/indirect care of patients and residents, or participates as a member of a treatment, nursing, medical or health care team in implementing appropriate regimens.</p><p><b>
Examples of Typical Tasks</b>:</p><p>
1. Assists in recreational and rehabilitation activities designed to meet the assessed needs, interests and capabilities of patients. Supervises patients/residents during field trips.</p><p>
2. Assists with the physical care and personal hygiene of selected patients, consisting of, but not limited to, changing simple dressings, giving enemas and taking vital signs. Prepares patient for meals and feeds them if necessary.</p><p>
3. Prepares patient for examination by performing assigned procedures such as temperature, pulse, respiration, height, weight and measurements, and assists in the examination process.</p><p>
4. Prepares patient and/or examining room for examination, treatment and/or procedures. Sets up and arranges examining room.</p><p>
5. Maintains, assembles and dismantles devices and equipment used in patient care. Prepares and tests<br>
equipment for safe operation and transports various equipment and supplies.</p><p>
6. Changes linen and makes beds. Keeps ward and/or unit, linen, utility, treatment, storage rooms and recreational areas in a neat and orderly fashion.</p><p>
7. Assists in care and storage of patients' clothing and property and sterilizes clothing and other personal<br>
items when required.</p><p>
8. Reports observations of patients' and families' condition, mental state and social behavior to medical and professional staff caring for patients, and participates in the assessment and/or care of patients and families.</p><p>
9. Maintains, controls, completes, processes and files patients' charts, records, transportation and time records, appropriate forms and documents.</p><p>
10. Assists in clinic, admission procedures and in regulation of visitors.</p><p>
11. Escorts ambulatory patients and transports non-ambulatory patients by wheelchair, stretcher, bed or stretcher-bed, including those with intravenous apparatuses to all departments, clinics, diagnostic and therapeutic units, religious and recreation centers, and other areas within the facility and facility's affiliation hospital. Accompanies children to facility school and explains nature of trips to patients.</p><p>
12. Transports bodies and/or assists mortuary caretaker in transporting bodies to the mortuary and places in refrigerator when necessary. Searches DOA's and completes the required DOA reports. Transports fetuses, amputated parts or other specimens to morgue and provides postmortem care.</p><p>
13. Collects and delivers specimens, charts, x-rays, regular and emergency requisitions for diagnostic tests and treatments. Performs other messenger duties, as required.</p><p>
14. Provides for comfort needs of patients and assists patient with all aspects and activities of daily living.</p><p>
15. Maintains clinical competence by attending continuing education programs.</p>
