<div>Description
The Ophthalmic Technician assists the Ophthalmologist/Optician and other technical support personnel to perform diagnostics tests necessary for patient evaluation. 
Responsibilities
1. Performs preliminary screening examinations for physician review including, but not limited to, central and peripheral visual field tests; ocular motility tests; color vision tests; pharmacological pupil tests; tonometry, tonography and tensilon tonography tests to determine intraocular pressure and pupil testing for size, equality and reaction prior to dilation.

2. Directs the flow of patients examined by the physician or optician; obtains medical and personal data for patient charts; screens patients for conditions excluding ocular examination; arranges for laboratory and other tests, ophthalmic photography, outpatient studies and patient admissions and surgery as requested by physician; alleviates patient and family concerns by explaining diagnostic procedures and method of treatment.

3. Calibrates and maintains all instruments used including, but not limited to bio-microscopes, lensometer, keratometer, tangent screen, slit lamp and tonometers; cleans and stocks consultation rooms and microbiology laboratory with drugs and other supplies as needed.

4. Sterilizes and sets up instruments for ophthalmic surgical procedures; assists with minor office surgery, laser treatments and operating room surgery as required.

5. Performs other duties as assigned.

The Department of Natural Sciences at Baruch College offers courses in biology, chemistry, physics, and environmental sciences. Reporting to the Chair of the Natural Sciences Department, Deputy chair of Biology and Chief College Laboratory Technician, the College Laboratory Technicians (CLT) will provide technical support for undergraduate courses and for research by designated faculty where appropriate. The Chairperson or Chief CLT will determine what materials, equipment, supplies, etc. will be allocated and assigned to support courses, sections and faculty research; will designate appropriate protocols to be followed; and will assign projects. Weekday hours may include early mornings or evenings.
Principal responsibilities during the academic year and summer sessions will include:
<div><div>Prepare all reagents, buffers, solutions, media, cultures, slides, stains and similar materials required for assigned courses, and ensure that these and all required reagents and equipment needed for appropriate courses are available in a timely appropriate fashion and in sufficient quality and quantity.</div>
<div>
Test and troubleshoot all new exercises and experiments before they are used in courses to ensure that all reagents, equipment, etc., are satisfactory and of good quality.</div>
<div>
When a class is over, dispose of, in appropriate fashion, all waste materials and solutions to satellite storage area; replenish materials and solutions for the next class and make sure that equipment is working.</div>
<div>
Remove and store in good condition and in an appropriate fashion all reagents, glassware, supplies, stocks, and any other materials used in lecture and/or laboratory exercises and classes as compatible with their safe use and proper storage procedures.</div>
<div>
Follow all federal, state, and local chemical hygiene and safety regulations. Obtain a New York City Fire Department Certificate of Fitness for supervising non-production chemical laboratories.</div>
<div>
Coordinate with the College&rsquo;s Environmental Health and Safety Officer for disposal of chemical waste.</div>
<div>
Track the use and consumption of all consumable supplies used in the laboratory such as reagents and media materials and submit in a timely fashion appropriate requisitions for the purchase of such supplies to ensure their continuing availability.</div>
<div>
Maintain in good working order all specialized instructional equipment used for undergraduate courses, including regular routine damage inspection and preventive maintenance as specified by equipment manufacturers. The CLT will ensure safe storage and safe use of all equipment.</div>
<div>
Track and maintain an inventory of all equipment and supplies. Where appropriate the CLT will contact specialty vendors concerning the availability, pricing, etc., of items in such inventories. Coordinate all local and external repairs and maintenance as and when required.</div>
<div>
Ensure that College and department safety protocols are followed when using materials and equipment in lab courses and will be vigilant in identifying and reporting any actual or potential health/safety hazards or incidents.</div>
<div>
Perform related work as assigned.</div>

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma with a minimum of four years' related experience. Additional education may be used to meet the experience requirement: an Associate degree may be substituted for two years experience, and a Bachelor's degree may be substituted for four years experience.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
<ul><li><div>A master's degree and 4 years of experimental laboratory experience are preferred.</div></li>
<li><div>
Candidates with experience in microscopy are highly encouraged to apply.</div></li>

COMPENSATION
$52,040 &ndash; $81,529; Salary commensurate with education and experience.
