Earthjustice&rsquo;s Clean Energy Program litigates and advocates in state and federal courts and before energy regulators across the country to advance an equitable clean energy transition. Our work includes expanding and increasing access to clean energy resources, including energy efficiency, solar, wind, demand response, and storage; advancing electrification; and opposing efforts to build new gas-fired power plants. We represent diverse clients individually and as part of coalitions.</p><p>

</p><p><b>Responsibilities</b></p><ul><li>
Lead complex climate and energy cases before state public utility commissions, state and federal agencies, and state and federal courts.</li><li>
Lead litigation and advocacy efforts, and perform the full range of litigation tasks, including conducting factual investigations, developing legal theories, securing expert testimony, submitting comments, petitions, briefs, and oral arguments.</li><li>
Collaborate in team problem solving, litigation strategy, and project management.</li><li>
Prepare discovery, pleadings, testimony, cross-examination, briefs, and oral arguments in state and federal regulatory proceedings and court proceedings.</li><li>
Collaborate with and oversee the work of technical experts.</li><li>
Work with our media and policy and legislation teams, as well as clients and partners, to leverage legal advocacy to obtain positive change and results.</li><li>
Supervise and mentor Associate Attorneys, interns, and litigation assistants.</li><li>
Collaborate and manage relationships with co-counsel, clients, and coalition partners to investigate, develop, and litigate cases.</li><li>
Join other staff in long-term planning, strategy development, goal setting, and work plan management that advances Earthjustice&rsquo;s work.</li><li>
Build and maintain effective working relationships with new and diverse clients and other partner organizations.</li><li>
Serve as spokesperson for Earthjustice, clients, and partners and help develop and execute effective media strategies.</li><li>

Qualifications</b></p><ul><li>
Law school graduate admitted, or eligible for admission to the applicable bar within 14 months of employment.</li><li>
6+ years of litigation and legal advocacy experience, working both independently and in a coalition setting, and a background in energy law is strongly preferred.</li><li>
Licensed to practice law in the US jurisdiction in which the attorney will be located, or a willingness and qualifications to apply for membership within fourteen months of employment.</li><li>
Ability to develop cases, manage a litigation docket effectively, lead a litigation team, and work collaboratively with colleagues and partner organizations.</li><li>
Creativity, initiative, good judgment, and strong work ethic.</li><li>
Ability to work effectively with technical experts, especially with respect to new technologies and emerging climate and health threats.</li><li>

<p>
The ACLU seeks applicants for the<b> term-limited</b>, full-time position of <b>Staff Attorney or Senior Staff Attorney</b> in the <b>Voting Rights Project</b> of the ACLU&rsquo;s National office in <b>New York, NY or Washington, DC. This is a </b><b>two-year, term-limited</b><b> position. </b>This is a <b>hybrid role </b>that has in-office requirements of two (2) days per week or eight (8) days per month.</p>
<p>
Established in 1965, VRP has worked to protect the gains in political participation won by voters of color since passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act (VRA). Since its inception, the Voting Rights Project has litigated hundreds of voting rights cases, and has aggressively and successfully challenged efforts to suppress voting or to dilute minority voting strength.</p>
<p>
The ACLU Voting Rights Project was established in 1965 &ndash; the same year that the historic Voting Rights Act (VRA) was enacted &ndash; and has litigated more than 350 cases since that time. Its mission is to build and defend an accessible, inclusive, and equitable democracy free from racial discrimination. We have three principles: (1) all Americans should be eligible to vote; (2) voting should be free and easy; and (3) all people should count equally. The Project employs an integrated advocacy approach, combining legislative advocacy, public education, and litigation, and has active cases in over a dozen states.</p>
<p>
The Voting Rights Project&rsquo;s recent docket has included more than 30 lawsuits to protect voters during the 2020 election; a pair of recent cases in the Supreme Court challenging the last administration&rsquo;s discriminatory census policies: Department of Commerce v. New York (successfully challenging an attempt to add a citizenship question to the 2020 Census), and Trump v. New York (challenging the exclusion of undocumented immigrants from the population count used to apportion the House of Representatives); challenges to discriminatory congressional and state legislative maps, including two recent cases in the Supreme Court: Alexander v. South Carolina NAACP (2023), challenging South Carolina&rsquo;s congressional map as an unconstitutional and starkly racially gerrymandered map; and Allen v. Milligan (2023), successfully challenging Alabama&rsquo;s congressional map as unlawfully diluting the Black voting power under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act; challenges to voter purges and documentary proof of citizenship laws; and challenges to other new legislation restricting voting rights in states like Georgia and Texas. The ACLU Voting Rights Project is currently litigating voter suppression and minority vote dilution cases in over a dozen states, from coast to coast, in every region of the country.</p>

The ACLU seeks applicants for the term-limited, full-time position of <b>Staff Attorney, Senior Staff Attorney, or Senior Counsel</b><b> (Two-Year)</b><b> </b>in the<b> Speech, Privacy &amp; Technology Project </b>of the ACLU&rsquo;s National office in <b>New York, NY. </b>This is a hybrid role that has in-office requirements of two (2) days per week or eight (8) days per month.</p>

The ACLU&rsquo;s Project on Speech, Privacy, and Technology (SPT) is dedicated to protecting and expanding the First Amendment freedoms of expression, association, and inquiry; expanding the right to privacy and increasing the control that individuals have over their personal information; and ensuring that civil liberties are enhanced rather than compromised by new advances in science and technology. The Office of the General Counsel (OGC) at the Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented attorney to support the Property Transactions &amp; Landlord Affairs Unit. Under the supervision of the Managing Counsel, this attorney will assist in providing legal support related to leasing transactions, property acquisitions, landlord-tenant matters, and other real estate issues involving City-owned properties. This role is an excellent opportunity for an attorney seeking to build or deepen their experience in municipal real estate law and public sector legal practice. The attorney will work closely with senior counsel, City agencies, and DCAS program staff to ensure legally sound and timely support of DCAS&rsquo;s real estate operations.<br>

The ideal candidate must be an motivated and detail-oriented attorney with strong legal research and writing skills, an interest in municipal real estate law, and a collaborative approach to problem-solving. The attorney will oversee our Conditions Project Client Advocates (&ldquo;CAs&rdquo;) in their work advocating for clients incarcerated in New York State prisons who are facing issues related to excessive use of force and harassment by DOCCS staff, denial of medical and mental health treatment, harassment and violence by fellow inmates, access to counsel issues, and violations of HALT. In addition to supervising the Conditions CAs, the attorney will represent clients at Tier III disciplinary hearings and work with clients to assist them in understanding sentence computations, obtaining jail-time credits through re-sentencings and negotiations, and obtaining violent- felony-override certificates. The attorney will also coordinate referrals to, and work with outside advocacy organizations and pro bono law firms pursuing system-wide advocacy and impact litigation.</p><p>The Conditions Project Supervisor will be supervised by the Legal Director and is not a member of the bargaining unit.</p><p><b>RESPONSIBILITIES</b></p><ul><li>supervise CAL&rsquo;s Conditions Project CAs, which includes assigning Conditions referrals to CAs in a timely manner and meeting regularly with Conditions CAs to conference cases and discuss overall operation of the project;</li><li>ensure that the Conditions of Confinement Project operates in a manner that serves our client&rsquo;s needs, which includes possibly redefining the scope of the Project to determine additional areas of advocacy that have tremendous value to clients such as terminating probation early, and waiving client court fees and mandatory surcharges;</li><li>maintain a personal caseload of Conditions Project clients;</li><li>welcome Conditions referrals from attorneys, and advise attorneys, and client advocates on questions related to conditions of confinement issues;</li><li>maintain and update Conditions client tracking system;</li><li>assist with hiring, onboarding, and substantive training for new Conditions CAs;</li><li>work with outside organizations and pro bono law firms in pursuing system-wide prison reforms, including collaborating with pro bono counsel to litigate 1983 cases</li><li>on behalf of conditions clients, and coordinating impact litigation and legislative initiatives along with other prison advocacy service providers;</li><li>represent CAL in macro-level system-wide conditions-related-coalitions that are working towards the betterment of prison conditions in New York State, including pursuing legislative initiatives in coordination with other prison advocacy service providers; and</li><li>manage the client support budget.</li></ul><p><b>QUALIFICATIONS</b></p><ul><li>commitment to CAL&rsquo;s mission statement and client-centered advocacy;</li><li>be admitted to practice law in New York State;</li><li>at least three years of relevant experience as a public defender, in public interest law related to litigating prison conditions, and/or with appellate practice;</li><li>excellent analytical, writing, research, and oral advocacy skills;</li><li>a passion for creative, persuasive, and strategic writing;</li><li>strong organizational skills and a diligent work ethic;</li><li>empathy and respect for people who have been convicted of serious offenses;</li><li>strong interpersonal skills, especially in the face of crisis or disagreement;</li><li>ability to exercise good judgment;</li><li>experience serving and/or advocating for disenfranchised communities;</li><li>deep understanding of the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion; and</li><li>a willingness and ability to work within the dehumanizing environments of prisons, jails, and detention facilities.</li></ul><p><b>LOCATION</b></p><p>The position is based at CAL&rsquo;s New York City office. CAL has a hybrid remote office policy and attorneys are permitted to work remotely 10-12 days per month.</p><p><b>SALARY</b></p><p>Starting salary will be between $102,293 for a 2022 graduate and $123,250 for a 2015 graduate (included within that amount is a $10,000 supervisory differential).
