Responsibilities
Patient Care<ul><li>

Nurse

<div>Description
A nurse practitioner (NP) as described in Title VIII, Article 139 section 6910 of the New York Education Law is a RN who has earned a separate certification as an NP through advanced clinical nursing education in a distinct specialty area of practice. Nurse practitioners are independent practitioners who diagnose, treat, and prescribe for a patient's condition that falls within their specialty area of practice.

NOTE: Medical orders, progress notes and treatments plans are not required to be countersigned by a physician. 
Responsibilities
CLINICAL PRACTICE

1. Assesses the health status of patients/families by means of comprehensive health history and physical examination.

2. Initiates and orders selected therapeutic and diagnostic procedures, consultations and laboratory examination, prescribes medication regimens, interprets findings and alters plan of care according to accepted standards of care and practice guidelines

3. Educates and counsels in the areas of health promotion, maintenance, disease prevention, and management of acute/chronic illnesses.

4. Documents findings and plan of care in the patient's medical record.

5. Consults with physician according to established standards, policies, procedures, and protocols.

6. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care, based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in assigned area.

7. Initiates referrals to specialty services and fosters continuity of care.

Qualifications
At least two years of nursing experience in area of specialty practice applied for. Nurse Practitioner experience of at least one year preferred

Licensure: New York State License with current registration as a registered nurse.

State Certification: Certified by the New York State Department of Education as a Nurse Practitioner with current registration as follows:

a. Is a graduate of New York State registered Nurse Practitioner Program or equivalent OR is certified as a Nurse Practitioner by a national association via examination.

b. Has completed a pharmacy component of not less than the required semester hours or the equivalent AND has been instructed in New York State and Federal Laws relating to prescriptions and recordkeeping (3-hour course).

c. Has a Collaborative Practice Agreement with a physician and designated protocols if less than 3600 hours experience as a practicing Nurse Practitioner.

OR

Has a Collaborative Relationship with a physician based on employment in clinical practice in the NP role at Mount Sinai Hospital. If there is a documented work history as a Nurse Practitioner with greater than 3600 practice hours. Please note all NPs regardless of their status will be placed on an FPPE initially)

Education:

Master's degree program designed to prepare a NP to diagnose, treat, and prescribe for a patient's condition that fall within their specialty area of practice or the successful completion of an approved supplemental education program, i.e., post-Masters NP certificate.

Experience: Previous progressive experience relevant to the area of clinical practice required.

For all NPs hired effective June 1, 2019, National Board Certification in Advanced Practice Nursing required. For NPs who bill for professional services, National Board Certification is required regardless of hire date. The Board Certification requirement may be deferred up to 1 year if approved by Chief Nursing Officer or designee.

Credentialed through the Credentialing Committee of the Medical Board with approved Delineation of Privileges

Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) certificate and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required

Position Summary

The Department of Neurological Surgery is seeking to recruit an experienced outpatient Nurse Practitioner to provide clinical care and clinical research in collaboration with the attending physician. The Nurse Practitioner will be responsible for evaluating and managing patients with neurological conditions that may require neurosurgery.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
<ul>
<li>Perform and document a complete medical history and physical examination to formulate diagnoses and treatment plan.</li>
<li>Order and review appropriate laboratory tests and imaging studies.</li>
<li>Review preoperative medical clearance and optimize patients as needed.</li>
<li>Prescribe medications and make appropriate referrals.</li>
<li>Manage patients via telephone, telehealth, or in-person appointments.</li>
<li>Consult selected patients in routine follow-up and for urgent same-day and next-day appointments.</li>
<li>Assist in the coordination of the operative schedule prior to surgery.</li>
<li>Coordinate admissions and collaborate with the inpatient team during daily rounds.</li>
<li>Provide patient education both pre-operatively and post-operatively.</li>
<li>Refer to specialists and multidisciplinary care team members.</li>
<li>Participate in division-specific clinical conferences, which include weekly NP conferences, departmental grand rounds, and multidisciplinary meetings.</li>
<li>Participate in research protocols related to patient care using Good Clinical Practices (GCP).</li>
<li>Perform other duties as assigned/requested.</li>
</ul>
Minimum Qualifications
<ul>
<li>Master's degree in Nursing (MSN) with prescriptive privileges (or eligibility).</li>
<li>A minimum of 2-4 years of nursing experience in addition to a current New York State NP and RN license.</li>
</ul>
Preferred Qualifications
<ul>
<li>Experience in neurosurgery, neurology, critical care, or emergency department care.</li>
<li>Recent NP graduates are welcome to apply.</li>
</ul>
Other Requirements
<ul>
<li>DEA Certification and Certification by ANCC, or AANP.</li>
<li>BLS certification.</li>
<li>ANCC Board Certification.</li>
<li>Must be able to meet credentialing requirements by NYP.</li>
