Research Assistant I - Psychiatry and Behavioral Health Sciences' REaKT Study

<div>The UTHealth Houston Psychiatry and Behavioral Health Sciences' Center of Excellence on Mood Disorders is looking for a strong candidate with excellent communication and interpersonal skills to recruit, see subjects, and manage regulatory and scheduling aspects of a longitudinal, observational study in Bipolar Disorder among families. The Greater Houston Area Pediatric Bipolar Registry follows children affected by Bipolar Disorder as well as children of parents affected by Bipolar Disorder in an effort to uncover genetic ties in the disease. Under general direction of senior research staff, this candidate will conduct activities to support research projects and exercise judgment within defined procedures and practices. The ideal candidate will be an independent problem-solver with GCP and IRB/IEC regulatory experience, a background in psychology, experience with children and adolescents (ages 6-17 years) and their parents, as well as strong written and oral communication skills. This is a full-time onsite position with a minimum two-year project, working in a fast-paced lab with a large group at the UTHealth Houston Department of Psychiatry inpatient and outpatient facilities. This candidate must be able to perform or willing to learn phlebotomy (drawing blood). This is an integral part of the position that will be required regularly.

 Laboratory Maintenance

 Maintain laboratory animals and update animal inventory
 </li>
 <li>
 Record detailed written reports of experimental data and protocols

 Maintain clean, safe laboratory work areas and ensure equipment is functioning properly

 Follow written equipment operation instructions and manuals

 Tissue Culture

 Maintain and establish tissue culture cell lines using sterile technique
 </li>
 <li>
 Determine cell counts and cell viability using microscope and hemocytometer
 </li>

 Monitor, order, and stock tissue culture supplies
 </li>
 <li>
 Establish short-term cell cultures from human or mouse tissues
 </li>
 <li>
 Perform basic microbiology, immunology, and in vitro cell growth and proliferation assays

 Mouse Work

 Complete training and certification for safe, humane handling of live mice
 </li>
 <li>
 Maintain mouse colonies and breeding pairs for targeted strains
 </li>
 <li>
 Set up breeding cages, transfer cages, perform ear tagging and tail snipping, and update colony, breeding, and genotyping records
 </li>
 <li>
 Implant orthotopic and subcutaneous tumors in mouse models
 </li>
 <li>
 Perform oral gavage and tail vein injections
 </li>
 <li>
 Work safely within a BSL2 environment
 </li>
 <li>
 Monitor mouse health and tumor progression during treatment trials
 </li>
 <li>
 Conduct in vivo tumor growth and treatment assays
 </li>
 <li>
 Calculate molarity and prepare accurate media solutions and reagents
 </li>

 Handle acids, polyacrylamide, flammable materials, and biohazards according to OSHA and institutional guidelines

 Coordinate weekend or holiday support to maintain continuity of mouse experiments
