 THE OPPORTUNITY
 
 
 
 The night assistant news editor is responsible for running the Sun-Times&rsquo; news coverage in the evenings. The editor will oversee the work of General Assignment reporters on the News Desk by assigning them stories, guiding their reporting and editing their news copy for print and online to ensure it meets our standards of excellence. The editor will work Tuesday through Saturday nights.
 
 
 
 Responsibilities
 
 
 
 <ul>

 Editing stories in a fast-paced environment for publication online and in print.

 Coordinating coverage with our topic desks, in some cases making sure a story of interest is assigned, or making reporters available to work with other teams.

 Staying on top of breaking news stories and monitoring coverage by other media to evaluate for potential Sun-Times coverage. Regularly reviewing social media, email inboxes and elsewhere for story ideas, possible sources and other communications.

 Working with our audience team to make sure stories get their maximum readership with strong headlines, internal and related links and other SEO-friendly tactics.

 Communicating with the print production desk to ensure all stories are moved for print in a timely manner.

 Keeping in touch with audio editors at WBEZ to keep up with planned coverage, look for opportunities for collaboration, share sources and cross-post stories.

 The Audience Editor is within an operations role on the audience team and is responsible for working across the newsroom to connect and engage our audiences with our journalism, radio shows and audio content across platforms. This person will work with audience specialists, reporters and editors to adapt, create and edit WBEZ and Sun-Times original reporting and content into formats that best align with audience behaviors and platform best practices, including but not limited to web-based article formats, social posts, vertical video content, SEO, audio playlists, web displays, SMS initiatives, push alerts, special newsletters and experimentation with emerging platforms.

 You&rsquo;ll be the primary editor in a small social team, crafting native, thumb-stopping video for TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, X/Twitter, Facebook, Twitch highlights, and more. You combine elite editing craft with a marketer&rsquo;s mindset: you care about retention graphs, watch time, and shares just as much as transitions and color grading.
 
 
 Alongside the Content, Insights &amp; Planning Manager, you&rsquo;ll be a key navigator for the Social Media Director, Community Manager, and Esports &amp; Influencer Managers&mdash;helping them see what formats, hooks, and stories are truly working and what we should scale globally. You treat attention as something you &ldquo;day trade&rdquo; every week: constantly cutting, testing, and iterating in response to what audiences are actually responding to.

 High-volume, high-quality editing

 Edit a high volume of platform-native videos with speed and precision&mdash;multiple pieces per day/week&mdash;while maintaining a consistently high bar for quality and brand voice.

 Produce videos optimized for mobile-first, sound-on and sound-off viewing (9:16, 4:5, 1:1, etc.) with strong hooks in the first seconds, tight pacing, and clear storytelling.

 Rapidly turn live streams, gameplay, product reveals, sponsor moments, and creator collaborations into short-form highlights and longer-form cutdowns when needed.

 Deep proficiency in Adobe Premiere Pro (or equivalent) and strong skills in After Effects/motion graphics, basic color correction, and audio mixing.
