Under the direction of a staff nuclear pharmacist and/or nuclear pharmacy leadership team, follow established policies and procedures to perform a variety of routine support tasks that are integral to the operation of the BICOR program and Nuclear Pharmacy department. Tasks include, but are not limited to, preparing and distributing unit-dose radiopharmaceuticals while maintaining the safe handling and integrity of medications. Tasks may also include responsibilities of technical training and participation in departmental projects. Staffing assignments will include roles throughout the Nuclear Pharmacy &amp; BICOR PET drug manufacturing program.

<ul><li>Perform all required pharmaceutical dosage calculations necessary to prepare extemporaneous dosage forms as applicable under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.</li></ul><br>
<ul><li>Adhere to safety requirements for handling radiopharmaceuticals in accordance with organizational policies and regulatory requirements.</li></ul><br>
<ul><li>May prepare compounded sterile products using principles of aseptic technique. May distribute and transport controlled substances under the appropriate state of control.</li></ul><br>
<ul><li>Performs daily quality control testing on prepared radiopharmaceuticals and associated instrumentation.</li></ul><br>
<ul><li>Handles various physical forms of radiopharmaceuticals and radioactive sources containing large quantities of radioactivity, including kits, unit-doses, and isotope generators.</li></ul><br>
<ul><li>Receive, check, store, label, package, and transport all radioactive material in accordance with NRC, DOT, MADPH regulations, and BWH Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).</li></ul><br>
<ul><li>Maintains clean, organized, and safe work areas inside a cleanroom environment used for aseptic processing.</li></ul><br>
<ul><li>Assists in the maintenance of computerized inventory and billing information including data entry and retrieval.</li></ul><br>
<ul><li>Perform routine, periodic floor inspections of materials handling areas to maintain the organization and adequate stock of medications and supplies in BICOR/Nuclear Pharmacy areas.</li></ul><br>
<ul><li>Maintains records on facility maintenance, instrument calibrations/maintenance, radioisotope receipts, inventory, shipments, quality control, laboratory surveys, institutional permits, personnel exposure, and disposal.</li></ul><br>
<ul><li>Assists in, resolves, and/or initiates invoices, work orders, and purchase order requisitions essential to the operation of the pharmacy and BICOR facility.</li></ul><br>

The primary responsibility of the Pharmacy Technician is to assist the Pharmacist by performing the technical and clerical tasks necessary for the accurate preparation and distribution of pharmaceutical products to the patient care areas of the hospital. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

<ul><li>Coordinates daily workload to coincide with the needs of the department.
</li><li>Prepacks non-unit-dose oral medications as needed for dispensing to the patient care areas.
</li><li>Aseptically prepares intravenous medications within the allotted time period.
</li><li>Always uses appropriate technique in the IV Room. This includes use of Aseptic Technique, Use of Chemo gown and appropriate gloves when handling chemotherapy, and closely abides by IV Room policies and procedures.
</li><li>Medication Orders: Medication Orders are filled accurately and efficiently.
</li><li>Omnicell: Dispensing to the Omnicell cabinets are accurately and efficiently performed.
</li><li>Stock Medications: Orders for stock medications are accurately and efficiently performed.
</li><li>Medication Inspections: Inspects assigned areas inside and outside the Pharmacy for outdated drugs.
</li><li>Telephone: Answers the phone in a courteous and helpful manner.
</li><li>Special Projects: Accepts extra duties upon request and completes them according to deadline.

Lead assigned patient service lines, clinical areas, and therapeutic programs:</li><li>
Facilitate pharmaceutical care, direct patient care programs, medication utilization systems within assigned care areas to assure drug utilization activities are aligned with patient care needs, evidence-based best practices, hospital guidelines, and regulatory standards</li><li>
Design and implement new pharmacy programs, quality improvement changes, and continuous quality assurance initiatives to advance the organization&rsquo;s medication-use systems and promote optimal patient outcomes</li><li>
Design and implement stewardship activities and restriction/surveillance programs</li><li>
Track and evaluate assigned pharmacy programs for operational, quality, and financial efficiency and routinely benchmark against local and national best practices</li><li>

Maintain proficiency in hospital computer systems and medication ordering systems</li><li>
Interpret, evaluate, and accurately process medication orders</li><li>
Complete critical patient monitoring and review patient chart to identify, prevent, or mitigate drug-related problems, improper drug or dose selection, subtherapeutic dosage, over dosage, adverse drug reactions, drug interactions, untreated indications, medication use without an indication, and treatment failures</li><li>
Follow established standard work parameters and maintains standard work environments</li></ul><p>
Participates in pharmacy operations and medication dispensing:</p><ul><li>
Maintain proficiency in and actively engage in operational programs, central dispensing pharmacies, satellite dispensing pharmacies, and specialty pharmacy areas as appropriate for job assignment</li><li>
Facilitate medication procurement, ordering, and dispensing procedures including, but not limited to, chemotherapy, parenteral nutrition, controlled substances, etc.</li><li>
Utilize pharmacy automation and supportive technology proficiently</li><li>
Oversee pharmacy operations and technician practice/activities when assigned</li><li>
Promote the use of the formulary by converting non-formulary medications to formulary alternatives when possible, evaluate appropriateness of non-formulary medication requests, and support procurement of non-formulary drugs when necessary</li></ul><p>
Facilitate experiential education and preceptorship:</p><ul><li>
Maintain proficiency in the four preceptor roles and actively emulate education/mentorship</li><li>
Serve as a preceptor/educator for MGH pharmacy residency (PGY1 and PGY2) and student experiential programs, including maintaining training and experience in pharmacy practice areas appropriate for teaching assignments</li><li>
Develop student, resident, and staff training experiences/competencies and create new relationships for teaching and training opportunities</li><li>
Identify, design, and mentor learners in implementing improvements in the medication-use system to advance patient safety, maximize therapeutic outcomes, or control costs</li><li>
Demonstrate personal leadership qualities, role model, and business acumen to advance the profession and practice of pharmacy</li></ul><p>
